I usually go looking for tube equipment, but rarely find stuff.
This time, it sort of came to me.
Saturday I went to a bunch of garage sales and in one I saw a pair of old Criterion speakers, was not interested, but hoped they would find a decent home. They were in pretty good condition, with the wood veneers damned near perfect.
Then there was a guy who bought them, and I offered to help him carry one of the two to his car. We started talking and before we got out the door, we were talking about looking for vintage tube equipment.
Out by his car, a guy who was in the same garage same had overheard some of our conversation and said he had some tube pieces at home that he wanted to get out of his garage. We all exchanged numbers to meet up some time later.
I called him at around 4:00 which was 3-4 hours later, but the guy said he was working and for me to call back later that Saturday. On the call back, he was still at work, and said he would call me tomorrow.
On Sunday he did call at 9:30 in the morning and I made an appointment for 11:00, along with the other guy from yesterday.
On arrival, there were about 10 pieces of vintage equipment laid out on a table. I started picking out the Fisher pieces and the other guy was looking for Scott stuff.
I got the following pieces:
1. Fisher 400 tube receiver with all original tubes, said to be working.
2. Fisher X202B Integrated Amplifier, not all original tubes and wooden case.
3. Fisher 200B Tube Tuner, all original tubes and wooden case.
4. Sherwood S-3000 IV Tube Tuner.
5. Lafayette Master Audio Control Center (Mono I think).
6. Bogen R660 Tube Tuner.
7. Bogen PX60 MPX Decoder.
8. Bogen DB130 Mono Tube Amplifier.
9. Raymer Solid State 801-35 Integrated Amplifier.
The Fisher X202B was tested with earphones after using my variac to bring it up to speed. Sounds pretty good so far, but I know I will have to do some cleaning and upgrading. It perfectly matches the 200B Tuner.
Have not tried out the Tuner yet, but I have to prepare for work tomorrow.
The Sherwood S-3000 IV tuner has a copper chassis, and is in pretty good condition. Untested yet, and still in the car.
I think I'm keeping the Fisher pieces, the Sherwood piece and the Bogen tuner and MPX decoder. Fisher amp does not have matching 7591A's, but I can eventually get a matching quad.
The Bogen amp is mono, so I will probably let go with the rest of what I'm not keeping.
Can't stop smiling, especially for the two matching Fisher pieces.
