Amazon has the AT-LP120-USB on sale...

And the PL-7 was <.025% wow and flutter and they sold for less.
This is a standard way of writing the specs, each manufacturer will specify them the same way,

Well that's the thing. Is that spec weighted, unweighted, JIS, RMS, DIN? Lots of different ways to measure the same thing, and they don't often say what method is used.

But <.025% sure SOUNDS like it's better than <.2%.

And for the vintage equipment that measurement was taken 40 years ago. No guarantee it still meets specs (apples to any piece of vintage equipment).

Not meaning to run down vintage or cheer for modern (four vintage Technics tables here), but I take all the specs on both with several salt grains.

Alright guys. Basically I made this post because I thought it was a decent deal and I've heard good things about the LP120...I actually own 2 tables already. I have an SL-20 and an SL-1300 both need new feet. But other than that are in EXCELLENT condition. Especially the 1300. It's almost flawless. I purchased it for $140. I just need to fine tune it. Looking for the correct protractor (preferably not a paper one), a bubble level and a tracking pressure gauge. I want my 1300 to be calibrated as best as possible. Currently using a Shure M447 I got brand new for $35.

You should sell the 1300, some eBay seller thinks they're worth nearly $900, that means he'll pay that right? lol

Let me summarize this thread.

Guy posts on AK thinking about about a new AT-LP120 turntable at a good price on Amazon. Guy is well versed in vintage tables already, already owns a couple, one is flawless and somewhat desirable even by those who value vintage turntables, but still sees decent value in the AT as a new turntable to try out.

And the answer is....

Go buy a U Turn Orbit.

Barter town is you salvation.

LOL.

Nothing I have read on the U Turn Orbit would give me any confidence about what it's capable of at the $200 price point, and in terms of features is no where near the AT IMO.

WTF?

None of us are knocking the OP for his posting the heads up but as the posts continue here there sure isn't a lot of love for the LP120USB. You could pay more for a Crosley if it just comes down to price. I thought the U-Turn Orbit was a very good option due to their strong customer support that would serve the target audience of first time turntable buyers best. Also their attention to quality control seems to separate them from just about all the other mfgs in the entry level market. Preowned vintage tables can be luck of the draw for inexperienced buyers but some have hit the jackpot as we have seen on AK. With these options the LP120USB IMO isn't the bargain it appears to be.

Very serviceable TT...

It is always exciting spinning those old 78s :music: The music jumps out at you

Hey Frank,

Fellow P L 120 owner here as well and love it.

The only mods on mine are:...

Rubber o-rings in various locations on the tonearm;
Replaced stock mat with Technics 1/4" thick Super Mat;
Replaced stock counterweight with heavier AT counterweight

The word Crosley is often dropped into the mix on these discussions. Fact of the matter is none here would even agree that a Crosley is a real turntable, but just throwing the word in on a new turntable discussion tends to skew the perception (as you just did).

I've read nothing about U Turn quality control that makes me think they are a world beater at the price point.

The number of satisifed reviewers of the LP120USB on Amazon can't be easily discounted. At $209 what the OP wrote it was a good deal. What is your problem with that other than you would rather see people buy the U Turn (even though you don't own one)?

Cheers.

But does that 'lack of love' come from people with any actual experience with the TT in question? I don't have any either, but most owners seem pretty happy with theirs and any independent reviews I've seen have been generally positive and the table has measured well in it's class (when measurements are provided). I think it'll probably loose out on the Orbit for build quality and QC, an occasional lemon is probably to be expected.

The U-turn sure is a good option, but 0.175% W&F for the basic model IMO is a red flag if that is true to real world performance. The plus model with 0.125% is more acceptable, but it's also considerably more expensive. Add $50 for cueing and you're almost twice the price of the AT-120LP deal, so I don't think it's the no-brainer some people make it out to be, though with the Orbit+ I'd expect better sound than the AT-120, especially if the latter isn't modified for true bypass of the internal phono-pre, but that would void warranty.

IMO this thread took a bit of a twisted turn from a simple heads up on a deal some might find interesting.

I played around with a 120LP this past weekend, but only for a minute. My impression was that it's built cheaply compared to pretty much any Technics. There is more platter wobble than on any of my vintage tables. The cover flexes and is cheap-looking.

But I'm sure it sounds fine. That's the main thing I guess.

Didn't some people have speed issues with the Orbit? Maybe that was an earlier run issue.

You may be talking about the infamous Wirecutter review. They had speed issues but U-Turn updated the bearings and belt. I haven't seen any issues since then.

Thinking about buying the lp 120.Seens to best bang for buck. Trying to resurrect vinyl collection. But there are 2 ls1200 on cl for 365$ for pair. Is it worth buying just as investment keep one sell one?

I have this particular table, albeit no USB since mine is about 8 years old. Is it the greatest thing out there? Of course not, but for the price, it's reliable and doesn't sound bad.

Technics SL 1200? Run don't walk. I'd take one for half that sight unseen so long as it's complete.
