I've been a member for about a month now. I've gotten lots of great tech and equipment advice, had some really good laughs and have been totally impressed with all the collective "stuff."

So what I want to know now is what recording, what song, what vocal or screaming guitar solo or what soulful sax tune or what concerto does it for you.

I listen to whatever is good from Nat King Cole, Led Zeppelin to Gorillaz. In no particular order here are couple of my sit down favorites when it comes to pure listening enjoyment.

Wild West End, Dire Straits album Dire Straits
Kokoku, Laurie Anderson album Mister Heatbreak
When You Say Nothing at All, Allison Krauss
Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-Flat major, Beethoven

Jim Reeves, almost any of his stuff. The man could sing, and was particular about which songs suited his voice and style. A shame he died so young.

Most any Windham Hill recordings are worth listening to.
 
The first record I put on when I set up any system is Roy Orbison's Mystery Girl, side two, track one, "She's A Mystery To Me."

I was fortunate enough to hear the original masters on the mastering system, so I know exactly what it's supposed to sound like.

I also like Bryan Ferry's Bête Noire, Al Cohn and Zoot Sims' You'n'Me, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk's Natural Black Inventions: Roots Strata. I will second the Marty Robbins and Jim Reeves props given above, and the Sundazed reissues of the Buck Owens and His Buckaroos studio albums sound great. Also in the mix comes Nirvana's Nevermind, The Plugz' Electrify Me, any Frank Sinatra Capitol-era stuff, and anything by Esquivel and Martin Denny.

And of course, anything by Dean Martin, Solomon Burke, Otis Redding, Sarah Vaughn, and Ella Fitzgerald.

Nothing quite makes me gel at the end of the day like Sade - Promise (particularly "Is it a Crime?"), all around one of my favorite albums. There are PLENTY of other songs/artists/albums that "do it" for me as well, but this is the one that comes to mind time after time.
 
I just got a 1977 mint LP of The Carpenters for $5. I just love her voice its so sweet. The songs are another thing but boy could she sing. Funny thing is this album has a Target price tag of $1.66. I don't remember them being that cheap.
 
I always play Richard Thompson's Vincent Black LIghtning 1952....multilayered finger picking guitar work and decent vocals...
 
One stand out song that does it for me...

Frank Sinatra with Louis Miguel..doing 'Come Fly With Me' from the LP 'Duets ll' .....the horns just wail!!...

I just bought off eBay a brand new unopened Roy Orbison's Mystery Girl LP. I've always like Orbison but oddly enough I don't have any of his LPs. I'm looking forward to checking it out. I have a new found appreciation for Sinatra and Martin, jazz, acoutics and classical music. I'm finding that the old vintage records and music sounds so much better than my rock n roll. I guess blasting Van Halen its kinda hard to appreciate the subtleties. Thanks guys!
 
Opened up my brand new Mystery Girl by Roy Orbison and I'm playing it on my just acquired Pioneer PL-570 turntable. Perfect timing. Sweet!!!
