Another AR-2ax thread

Hey all! I need some help. I recently acquired a pair of AR-2ax's for $30 off CL. I brought them home and fired them up. Of course, the tweeter/midrange on both were not firing. One of the woofers was shot and the other coughed meekishly. I opened up the babies and found everything was original, including the batting. I pulled everything out. Replaced the caps in both. Replaced all four pots with new ones. Found a single woofer on fleecemebay that was an original six-screw and threw that in. I then replaced the batting with brand spanking new r-30 certainteed insulation. Sealed the woofers back up with sta put. I then uncovered my 8080db and brought it out to fire up the puppies. I put in some Coltrain, then Santana, then some Fogerty. After tweaking the mid-range and high controls, GREAT GOD OF AUDIO! I really like them. They don't have the bass response that my Pioneer CS-A700's have, but they have a very smooth sound to them.

Now here's where I need some help. The cabinets are in need of sanding and refinishing. I have two stains that I use pretty regular - Watco med walnut and dark walnut. The danish oil is great stuff. Easy to apply. However, I'm not sure if I want to give it a walnut stain or a red mahogany. Has anyone refinished these cabs before and what did you use?

Why do people who have no idea about asbestos make wild conjectures? Did AR own an asbestos company so they could stuff speakers. Probably NOT.

Easy there Sheltie Dave...it was just a joke. I removed it from the post so as not to offend you and the whole AR company.

What was the joke, I missed it?.................... I have to agree that Danish oil is great stuff, and so are AR speakers.

Anybody who needs to dispose of their highly toxic AR speakers can send them to me for proper disposal!

"Guys get a Grip" On what? My fear of asbestos........ My house has asbestos heating vents. The seized lady I bought this place from, was 98 at her passing.

At the time of inspection, I passed on that gas test also (The gas that is supposed to kill you, or cause cancer) Probably just a money maker for a guy who owns a meter .... I don't even remember what that gas was called.

you didn't mention resealing the woofer surrounds. that may improve the bass response. i'm listening to my 2a's (same woofer), and the bass is most impressive.

Yup, I resealed the woofers with sta put. I'm not saying they sound bad, I guess I'm just being too overly critical. Thanks for the input!!

Acoustic suspension is sealed anyways........ where is the problem?..........

He he! Anyhow, the old stuff came out in pieces, so I figured I'd just replace with batting I've used in other projects to save me the hassle of stuffing the old batting back in.

Are you talking about re-doping the surrounds or using moretite like caulking to seal the driver to the cabinet? You need to do both.

I sealed the driver to cabinet. I did not "re-dope" the surround. Explain please!!

It seems there might be a misconception that your 2ax woofers have cloth surrounds that may or may not need "redoping". however the 2ax woofer is foam surrounded so doping would not be required.......the 2ax is a fine stereo speaker that produces suprisingly good bass when properly powered solid state amplification is applied:yes:

The earliest 2ax's (the ones with the same red dome tweeters as the AR-3) had cloth surrounds. Which doesn't necessarily mean that they need redoping.

If that's case forget about everything I said about this particular 2ax:tears:.
