Here is a nice Sony TA-5650. If I hadn't just bought one from doucanoe I would bid on this one. Good luck! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5833327009&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT&rd=1 I do not know the seller, but perhaps one of our many AKers in the area would help in getting and shipping, etc., if needed. Or, maybe Brian will get this for his Bozaks.

And, in the event you have a VFET amp or other Sony amp from this era, this is the TOTL preamp to match it. Is the successor to the venerable TA-2000F. http://cgi.ebay.com/BEAUTY-70S-SONY...ryZ14974QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I bought a Sony TA-5650 VFET integrated amp from this seller last year and it was exactly as he described. And, he packed it well.

Here is a Sony VFET amp, the TAN-8550

and matching TAN-8450 preamp

Seller is a bit optimistic on his prices, me thinks. But, what a nice pair (is that an audio term? :huge: )

The 5650 is still pretty reasonable (so far) but the 5450 is getting up there. The 8x50s on A'gon are way out of line, the last few 8550s on eBay went for $600-700 and 8450s $300-400.

the 5450 was a more affordable preamp, less expensively built. The 2000F was still available throughout the 5450's lifespan AND still more expensive :)
the same goes for the ST-5000F and ST-5950SD.

While not a VFET, this little amp is another primo product from Sony and is on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5832786440&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT&rd=1

The seller has a pair of them (he must have run them as monoblocs as they are bridgeable).

Any of our Canadian AKers anywhere near the seller in Quebec? I might like to have one of these to tri-amp my NS-1000M with as they make 18wpc in switchable Class A (like the CA-2010/CA-1010 Yamaha integrateds). Also, Axel has some additional info on The Vintage Knob.

drats YB-2, another one on my watch list(yep, he has a pair) :D
Greg - from what I know of these, you should get them and then use in their Class A mode to tri-amp your AR9s. You would be well on your way to audio nirvana! :thmbsp:

btw, he's about a 5 or 6 hour drive from me one-way... too far :sigh:

If Yahoo maps is to believed it's Quebec City, so you'd better double that drive time! To put it in perspective - Boston is closer than you are!

rmihai, thanks for the link... but could you edit it out of your post?

normally, just copy/paste the info.

I'm not sure the 2x 18W would be enough for AR-9s, even tri-amped... as much as I like mine (I have two), the N86B is a little amp. I've seen a quadri-amped pair of SS-G9 with 4x TA-N86 but the G9 specs are less demanding than that of the AR-9s!

The big one was the TA-N88 V-Fet but it is nowhere near as reliable due to the problems ilimzn has very clearly outlined in the dedicated N88 page on TVK. Plenty of dead N88s but a dead N86 is a true rarity.

If you can't drive a pair of tweeters with 18wpc then those are some MASSIVE tweeters. The energy needed to drive tweeters as loud as they will go is generally only a few (single digit) watts.

The TA-5650 went for $177, which was a good deal for the buyer if it was as stated.
The preamp went for what I consider to an astounding amount of $235. Worth it, but never seen one go anywhere near that. eBay bidders must be getting better educated as far as Sony vintage gear goes. My guess is it will ship back to Japan.
The big Sony VFET amp and matching preamp have just had a price reduction to $750, each, on Audiogon. That's better, but not good enough.

The guy that has the pair on Audiogon, says the TAN 8450 is a preamp and the Tan 8550 is the poweramp. Maybe he made a mistake and it is actually a TAE 8450.
