Another ultra-rarity enters the stable: Sony Placido

This **** is so nice.
I predict that soon that a lot of the gear from China will look equally as enticing.
If they get the right person to voice the equipment it may be all good and possibly all that as well cause they can deliver for sure.
Only time will tell.

Its output stage is a Sanyo STK401-70, a 2x 40W thick film amp IC in a single package; it would be a good idea to keep the amp on top to ensure best possible ventilation. These STK ICs have a high power/surface ratio, and failures are most often related to overheating.

Wow $3300. Is there any difference with the one commercially available outside Japan? I remember seeing it back then in my hometown but it doesn't cost that much. And I think there were 4 decks: casette player, tuner, surround processor, amplifier.

Sony made some really nice and very fine sounding equipment for the local Japanese domestic market. Some of the domestic Sony equipment sounds simply 'outstanding'. It will just stop you in your tracks. That's Sony??!! What I mean is they sound super outrageously great.

I think they sell these higher quality, and expensive, stereos to the domestic (Japanese) consumers, because the Japanese love 'great sounding' stereos and the consumers don't mind, and are willing to, paying big yen for them. Then Sony learns from it, as all companies do, and they adapt the technology to cheaper exports, but the exports will never sound that good because of the interior componets. You know, quality for the domestic folks, a good product for the rest of the world to purchase for a cheaper price. Internationally prices for sales.

You may not agree but I've seen it happen many times living in Japan off and on for 34 years.

Anyway...Sony lost 2 Billion last year. Saw it on the news.

P.S. That's a beautiful stereo narkleptic!

That's a neat little setup, I really love these mini-systems that far outperform their size. Do you have the specs on them? It would be interesting to see/hear how they perform with speakers other than the ones that it came with. I too would be interested to see what the amp looks like under the hood.

I have a Toshiba System 15 that is just an amazing little setup.

Regarding Sony products, its true that Sony can, has and does produce some exceptional, world-class equipment (take for instance the new SS-AR1 loudspeakers). In fact, I own a pair of SS-M9ED speakers, which are truly stunning.

The unit is set at 100V. I have a step_down transformer.

The system was originally ofwred as both a 3 piece and 4 piece set

I have an old Hitachi mini-componet set I bought in Japan back in 1983 or so. The cassette deck and EQ are long gone but the amp and speakers sound wonderful with a little portable CD player plugged into AUX.

It sounds so great I just don't have the heart to get rid of it. It's in the closet. Fired it up about a year ago...still sounds wonderfully 'real'.

I'm waking up an old thread instead of opening a new one. I see the Placido speakers (only) for sale locally, this seems to be the export model, and it's in a good condition. I'm planning to drive it with my TA-1055 which produces 25W into 8 Ohms. Are these speakers sensitive enough to be driven with 25W? Anybody have access to the speakers datasheet or have some figures/impressions they can share?
TIA.

That's a very cool system, and those tweeters look to be a descendent of the bio-cellulose models they developed for the SS-GR1. I'd so, they're ancestors of some of the best hi frequency drivers out there.
