Hey
I recently inherited an old Sony boombox, the telescoping antenna has broken off the base I am hoping to find a way to repair it. Here's what it looks like

There are 2 little tabs at the base of the antenna but one is about half broken off. I don't know if they were just bent under the knob that swivels or did something else? Think I could solder the antenna on? Maybe I could disassemble the base and buy a replacement antenna?. I haven't opened the case yet but I plan on doing it to clean the controls that are scratchy sounding

You should be able to simply remove that screw you see there underneath the antenna base with a Phillips screwdriver, and then remove the broken off nub that is secured by the screw. Buy a replacement portable radio antenna on Amazon and then just screw it back into place.

Man that sounds too easy! Thanks!!

No problem, you are not the first person to break off an antenna! When you are searching for a replacement, you may also see it listed under the term “telescoping aerial” depending on which country you’re in.

What he said. And easily done.

I entered "replacement portable radio antenna" in Consumer electronics on ebay and got a lot of results.
First search with no location specified had several with GBP pricing, I assume that is Great Britain. Not sure why and can't find a link to click to change GBP to USA pricing, so then I selected usa only.
Maybe it was because I didn't put "portable" in the first search, was the same type of product shown except wrong currency.
Either I did something wrong or there's a glitch on ebays end?

you may be able to just press it back on. That's how they were made. If the bottom of the tube is distorted, maybe straighten it and push it back onto the swivel stud. A little crazy glue might help.

I did take the screw out and pulled the base out. It looks like the replacements are a little shorter than mine but mine is from the 70's so I'm sure they had to shorten them to cut cost.
I probably could crimp it back on

While there is probably some truth to what your saying about cost, the antenna length could be important. Antenna length determines resonant frequency. The higher the frequency, the shorter the antenna. Different receivers may have a matching ckt for a specific length antenna, so all telescoping AM/FM antennas are not the same length. I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it unless you replaced a really long antenna with a really short one or vice-versa. Nice repair.
