Any Hi-End Turntables with (at least) Auto-Lift?

Technics SL-1500-C. Has Autolift. End of your search. Outperforms a lot of those others too.

And the only upgrade you need (if desired) is a cartridge of your choice if the Ortofon 2M Red isn't what you dig. And headshells and headshell wiring, and KABUSA tweaks are available. The Technics SL-1500-C is good enough for me to own, and it's reliable and a treat to own and operate, sounds great, and just plays the music on your records without fuss and frippery, unfailingly musical every time. Even it's manual only father, the SL-1500 excels at that (my only upgrade a Technics SL-1200 Mk II genuine headshell, and the Shure M 75 B cartridge which lives on this headshell). I use it every day. It's reliable every day. It adds nothing to my records, nor subtracts what is on them either.

No way in hell i could afford a 10000.00 dollar deck but i find it depressing that cheaper ones dont have auto lift at least. The dual506 i use does and its useful when i fall asleep listening... it does happen. Also i know many younger folks, 20s and 30s, and when they come over they are always impressed by the mechanical aptitude of semi and fully automatic tables. Im 63 btw and will continue to use old stuff until new stuff becomes more attractive to me.

I just don’t see the clamor for the feature. Especially when there is a product that can lift tone arms and fit on most tables. I get that the 2-3 of you are banging pots to make noise. But few do not, a market make.

1. I do not get this urge by posters to try to be jerks. "banging pots"? really? You could probably be polite if you made an effort.
2. Your view ignores the fact that there *is* a market. All those stick on lifters are part of that market. People are willing to stick a goofy aftermarket lifter onto their turntable just to add this feature yet manufacturers of the high end and everyone in the middle who wants to emulate high end is leaving auto lift off. Why? Saying no one wants it seems to ignore the reality in front of you.

How is this an argument all of a sudden? The OP was about high end turntables - not run of the mill Techies and Duals and we've not established a single fact yet. Reality has many faces. I don't see any of the high end turntable owners in this forum complaining about the lack of automation and if there was enough demand - there would be supply. If there was money on the floor - the niche lucrative market would have found a way to pick it up. There just seems to be none. Even those who are willing to stick 'goofy' aftermarket lifters onto their turntable (which IMO is a rather elegant and harmless solution for those who wish it), seem to opt for the cheaper asian knockoffs and avoid the original designs anyway - so none of what is in front of us here right now really addresses the OP title.

Funny, you make snide and cutting comments about those who use manual tables, and the products that companies produce that align to those customers preferences.

Then you chide another who disagrees with your premise and tell them to be polite? Huh.

The Yamaha GT 2000 is a legitimate heavy hitter. My YAL-1 armlifter is fitted and I have never used it.

Very few arm lifting mechanisms do the job without some measure of compromise. Thus it all depends on what one wants their turntable to be doing. For background noise duty, an arm lifter makes a load of sense. For deeper listening, capability might loom as a priority. We all make choices based upon our motivations.

I don’t believe I made snide and cutting remarks. I believe I said the reason for this lack of automation is market perception, whether or not it’s a matter of audio quality. I’ve said I believe you could make auto lift without compromising audio quality and without making an unreliable piece of equipment. I’ve asked rhetorically why automation is rejected by the high end and yes I draw the conclusion that it’s because the high end is not driven only by audio concerns.

Now I’ve seen a few people in AK get really defensive about this idea that the highest priced audio sales are not driven purely by audio concerns. I’ve seen you get defensive about that idea and I read this post as just that. I don’t understand this defensive reaction to someone who doesn’t share your belief. I’ve surely only expressed my opinion in reasonably polite terms. If you could point to where I’ve said “only a fool would pay so much” or something to that effect well I will certainly apologize... but I never said anything like that. I haven’t even implied that because I don’t believe that.

However I can point to the posts where my opinion is described as “specious” (meaning I believe this because it’s somehow convenient to believe it but it’s false) well I let that go but a polite way to say that is “sorry I can’t agree, let me tell you my experience”. I can point to where I was told the simplest of children could tell the true value of a very expensive piece of equipment (in other words my perceptions fail to meet the simplest most uneducated example possible) ok well yea I let that pass as well initially. But if you want to find snide and cutting there it is and it’s not coming from me,

You want to pay very high prices and enjoy your purchases. I’m not stopping you. You want to react defensively when people don’t agree with you? Well if you just can’t stand to read that someone disagrees, there’s a block feature. However it might be worth asking why you feel disagreement translates in your mind into “snide and cutting comments”.

1. It’s a figure of speech. Just because it is an apt figure of speech, does not make it impolite. Now if I had made a statement more along the lines of a generalization, “I think the only way to command the highest prices is to pander to the ideas shared by the wealthiest buyers“ then that could be taken as being impolite.

2. The lifters work with different arms. Most high end decks accommodate different arms. You also again paint a broad brush by calling them goofy, which will not endear you to folks that have and use them. Even if they very well may be. Again, Your opinion denigrates everyone who has one. The polite thing to do would be to state the opinion without the descriptor. Could this just be a case of the pot calling the kettle black?

As has already been mentioned. The Technics SL-1500c is available for purchase and fits most of the criteria being argued for. It’s not too expensive to be out of reach. I look forward to all the excellent reviews from the polite market here on AK.

I can't believe this topic is still going. As has been stated, the marketplace dictates what is sold to the public. And for those of you who are looking for auto lift, you have options. SL-1500C, for auto lift, Denon DP-300 for full auto. Now neither one is in the super high end, but are you willing to spend 5 grand for a new table? 10 grand? It would appear most buyers are not looking for the feature. If Techincs sold out on the 1500C, then others would consider adding the features to compete, but again, how high of a price could they add on with this feature to make it work the cost?

I agree!
However, if these stick-on-auto-lift-gadgets are so great, just curious why higher end makers don't offer one built-in.......
There truly is zero technical (audiophile) reason not to, IMHO.
Just a benign little post sitting silent out of the way until the listening stops.

Look at my last post and maybe you'll have your answer eh? High end tables come sans arm, maybe Carnac the Magnificent could clue them in on each customers choice and install the appropriate lift for each?

My Empire 598 had a magnetic auto lift. Worked great . Great turntable . My Sansui 2050 has auto lift and auto shut off. A very good sounding turntable .

What marketplaces "dictate" is more along the lines of "one size fits all", IMO.
Of course!! All companies are in the business to make as big of a profit as possible. If they see a potential to make an even bigger profit with auto lift, they would add it. It appears at this point, that profit is not there.

Yes, there are very good turntables, both new and old, with auto lift or auto return. However, the OP wants to spend at least $4K, and wants it to be new.
