Any Love For The Kenwood JL 770 ???

There has been a set of Kenwood JL 770 speakers sitting in a local thrift shop just languishing. Just this weekend it seemed that a bunch of electronics disappeared from the store. I asked one of the employees at the store what they did with the all items that did not sell. He said that they send all the unwanted stuff to a central recycling center to be disposed of. I think these speakers may soon meet that fate.

They appear to be in decent condition a minor scuff of two on what appears to be wood veneer. All the drivers look to be in good condition with none of the dust caps pushed in yet. Grills in good condition and made in the U.S.A. :thmbsp:

So I'm wondering if these speakers sound any good at all or if they are just the all show no go type speakers bundled with stereo systems sold at the strip mall.

They are asking $50.00 but perhaps I could make them a more reasonable offer since they have been sitting there for so long.

So I'm curious what people think of these. Maybe good garage or outdoor set of speakers. :scratch2:

IMO, I see 80's big-box speakers with paper-cone tweeters and immediately write them off. I wouldn't spend $20 on them, much less $50, unless you just need garage speakers like you said (but even then, I'd look for something physically smaller to be able to be placed anywhere).

That's kinda what I'm thinking too but you can never tell a book by its cover.

I have seen a lot of speakers here on AK that look like complete junk visually but people seem to love them and they have huge followings.

Take the Realistic Nova 8B for example. They have paper cone tweeters and they don't really look like much with their grills off but people seem to love them. Videolady201 did some crossover mods for the Nova 8B and her thread has well over 500 responses. :thmbsp:

Hopefully some previous owners of the JL-770 will chime in with a :thumbsdn: or a :thmbsp:

yea
Not quite sure how you got the idea that he even owned them at all, much less had them for sale, and even less...had them for sale after 3 years???
Yea i know i looked at the date last night than i was like wtf i am stupid but i have a pair of jl770s in my room paired with the kenwood ka127.

i realize that this is a 5 year old post but i also struggled to find any info on these same speakers, i made a gamble at 40 for the pair and it paid off big time they are actually killer sounding crisp highs and a decent bit of bass for not having a port for the 12inch woofers

Well that is a fantastic way to revive a thread and to join AK. Welcome.

You like them and you'd likely have to pay 10x that price to get something new from a store that sounds as good. Well done.

Agreed, great first post. Revived thread, didn't ask for value, didn't offer for sale, didn't ask for any help whatsoever. Well done and welcome.

thank you very much I figured it would be best to give some info and help rather than ask the same damn question, it happens all too often

I just picked up a pair of JL 770s at a garage sale for $10. Cabinets certainly aren't mint, but not a disaster either. I'm fairly pleased with the sound for the price I paid. Also got a pair of Pioneer CS-N575s and a Sanyo TP1010 turntable from the same guy, $10 each also. The Pioneer's cabs were about the same as the Kenwood's, and the Sanyo tt has no stylus, but that's okay. He also had box upon box of 45s and lots of albums. Picked up a copy of Sgt. Pepper, unopened Blondie Autoamerican, Guess Who American Woman, Loggins and Messina(2nd album), Atlanta Rhythm Section Champagne Jam, and Bob Dylan Nashville Skyline, along with a nifty 45 record holder/book - Check out the pic. All albums in good condition. Grand total = $40 for gear and albums. I thought I did alright. Sorry about mentioning the albums, I know this isn't albumkarma.org. Just wanted to illustrate how good I thought the deal was. Icing on the cake was sitting and talking with the guy for 30 minutes about our favorite music.

Not bad speakers for what they are. I had a pair and they are good party or garage speakers.
Obviously you can't compare them to the high end speakers but still better than some of the plastic all in one junk they make nowadays!

Good luck in your dumpster diving. It is a respectable way to help save the planet. I tell my wife that whenever she complains.

Welcome to AK!

Yep Yep. Back in 2017 I came across a pair of Kenwood JL-1090AV speakers. Spring cleaning led someone to put them out on the curb for the trash pickup. They were big, lots of drivers, looked pretty good and not that heavy. I recapped with Daytons and carried them in and out the back door for summer activities. When fall came I listed them on CL for $40 - no takers. I took them to Goodwill and passed the fun along to the next person. It only took two days for someone to buy them for $20.
