Anybody have info on Electro Voice receivers? pics inside

I had a friend of mine give me an old Electro Voice EV-1278 reciever. I was curious if anyone here had any info on these. Tags on the bottom read as follows:

Silver sticker on bottom:
Electro Voice Model E-V 1278 am/fm stereo receiver. Power consuption 8 watts min-72 watts max. Electro-Voice, Inc. Buchanan, Michigan

Small black sticker above and to the right of the big silver one:
Power Output: 36 watts continuous @ 8 ohms, 65 watts IHF @ 4 ohms

Green sticker(on right looking at bottom):
Electro-Voice AM/FM tuner. Serieal No. 11115 unit.

Red sticker(on left):
Electro-Voice amplifier serieal No. 17754 unit.

Controls on the front are as follows:

Top row:
Bass, treble, selector switch, balance, volume, tuner knob and signal meter.

Bottom row:
phones, mono/stereo switch, tape/source switch, speaker mute/on switch, loudness on/off switch, am/fm switch and a switch under the tuner knob that is labeled AFC on/off.

This unit does power up but I have not hooked up speakers or a source to it yet.

Cut that 36 watts in half and you've got 18 wpc... which is what it really is. Electro-Voice's late 60's Receivers had a unique look but were generally a flop in market and that's why EV didn't continue with them. They're not in much demand now either, but, nonetheless, it's still cute and best of all --- free! So, if it still works....all the better!

I can certainly understand why someone would give it away because what it would fetch on e-Bay is not worth the time or bother, especially with the selector switch as it is. Better you than the landfill. But, if working well, it sure would make a nice present for a little boy looking for his first vintage receiver.
 
There are some threads on the amp and tuner IIRC. The receiver is each with a common faceplate. There is a slow growing group of mini-component collectors and while not worth much to most, since the receiver is quite rare, there is a market for it, if you are going to turn it over.

The units were offered by E-V but few dealers ever stocked them or even knew they existed. The tuner section as a stand alone was probably the largest selling item of the series as it was used in background music systems in commercial installations. When they came out, the market looked like it might trend towards smaller units but with the growth of the Japanese market incursion, it died a quick death with only KLH ever really having any success with their line of 5x series receivers as they had established a market position with their earlier 18, 16 and 27 receivers as well as their compact combination amps/changers.

It looks like you are only missing the knob. I'd scout the the industrial suppy houses and suspect you'll find a suitable replacement as they were common to othr products besides these units back then. Find a nice pair of fairly efficient speakers and the unit will make for a nice easy listening system.

I think that knob maybe floating around in the garage as that is where the little unit has been setting for about a year and a half. I'll look for it as I clean out there. If not I'll find something pretty close I'm sure.

I powered it up again and it looks like all the lights function. The upper left corner area next to the tuner face is where the indicator light for the different modes are located. Screaned on the face under each light is from L-R phono, tuner and aux. The phone indicator is red, the tuner is green and the meter lights up and the station indicator glows red. The aux lamp is amber/yellow. Each indicator is about an inch long. The volume pot also is the power on/off switch.

Vinatgestereos hit the nail on the head w/ this one. If it works it will be passed on as a gift for someone w/ the bug. May pair it w/ my old Magnavox TT and hunt down a good inexpensive set of small speakers. That should put a smile on someones face and a lil'AudioKarma in ther soul :banana:
 
From what I have been told on this forum, EV also had some branded units under the name of Royal. I have one that sound so so and is not impressive. The speaker that came with it(also branded as Royal sound good for what they are
 
I have an integrated amp from the same era. I like it for the compact size and it is pretty punchy for its size. See this thread for some more comments:

There is also a thread with a link to the company that bought out EV. I can't find the thread and don't remember the parent company name. When found you should be able to get manuals for you receiver. I like the looks of those for some reason. I'm keeping mine and even looking for the matching tuner just for the hell of it.

I recently got a Electro Voice 1382 receiver for free and can find almost no information on it. Does any member out there know what the idle current should be set at ? Any other info would be great also. Thanks
 
I restored an EV 1181 a while back and it is a cute low-power unit, perfect for my small workshop. I grabbed the picture below off of the web.

I have one and have the original manual 40 watts at 8 ohms, nothing on idle current, awesome receiver.
