Anybody Know Anything About Pioneer SX-1250 receivers?

All kidding aside, I just picked one up for $2.00 at my local thrift. I told the supervisor there a few weeks ago that I would buy most of their stereo electronics even if it didn't work. They told me if they couldn't get stuff working or if speakers had rotted surrounds, or were otherwise scratched or beat up, they ended up in the dumpster.

Apparently the guy that dropped this off said that it worked, but when they hooked it up, they couldn't get anything out of it.

The cabinet is in real good shape, better than my SX-1050 & other than needing a good cleaning, the rest of the receiver is in great shape too.

EDIT: 12-21-09

After checking DC offset of 2.2mv L & 5.3mv R. I hooked a CD player to the Aux & then to Tape Mon # 1. The speakers to A & then to C. The sound is thin/low but clear. When I switch the tone control on or activate either high or low filters = no sound.

I worked all the controls and found no great scratchy:D ness. That may not be the case at normal volume or with the tone controls activated.

Also ...... none of the function lights are working. The tuner backlight & the meters light(s) are working.

Start with the simple stuff furst. Pre amp jumped to the amp side. Tape switches set to monitor source. And so on. Great buy even as a parts unit.

I've seen 2 or 3 non-working units go for $150+ on eBay. Not that that is where this is ending up. I'll get it fixed. I've got to recap my SX-1050 this Winter too. Hopefully I can get to this stuff after the holidays.

This is unfair.... I'm ready to fork out $490 for one of those, and here comes this guy who brags about picking one up for 2 bucks....

Congrats buddy, you did VERY good!!!! :thmbsp::thmbsp:

No, no, I'm not jealous AT ALL....

I paid full-boat $700 for my Pioneer SX-1050 back in 1976 so I've paid my dues .............. I was just damn lucky to stumble across this. Hell .......... I don't know if it works or not. I'm almost afraid to hook it up. :D

My wife has got my bench tied up with her paint stuff right now so I don't even have any place to tear into it.

Enjoy it to the fullest, even if it takes some tinkering with... everybody says it's a GREAT receiver... I have the 1080 myself but will probably be picking up this 1250 next week... I have a pair of CW D-9s to drive!!!!

Other than the additional wattage, is there any great difference in sound between the SX-1050 & the SX-1250? I've owned my 1050 since the 70's but have never heard a 1250, let alone in an A-B comparison. I know some of you own or have owned both.

The tuner is better in the SX-1250 than in the SX-1050, though, of course, after 30 years, it might need an alignment to get it back to spec. See:

If you don't listen to the radio, then the main difference is more power in the SX-1250, and probably not worth bothering about.

Thanks ............. I knew the tuner on the 1050 was great because I could pick up a lot of distant FM stations on it with little or no antenna hooked up to it.

Did the metal grills on the top come in brown or has this one been spray painted to tone it down? The one on the top of my SX-1050 is black.

I never realized that either of those don't have watt meters like the 1980. What a find on that 1250. I would love to have one of those as well.

Nope. Never heard of them.

You have pretty much the same equipment I have except I also have an SX-1050 & a PL-510 I've had since the 70's, & a pair of CS-99A's that my niece just gave me a while back.

Before powering on I'd suggest hooking it up with a dim bulb tester to prevent smoke and fireworks. Could be what happened at the thrift store when they tried to test it. Also check to make sure the amp and pre-amp connectors exist. Lots of rebuild and troubleshooting tips here on AK for the 1250 and 1050. Howards wood cleaner and restorer will do wonders on the wood cab. Nice score :thmbsp:

I know the young guy that works at the thrift & he would have told me about any "smoke". He just said they couldn't get any sound out of it. I'll check the DC offset & then hook it up to my junk test speakers.
