Anybody noticed the Concord Jazz masters for sale?

FAB1

playing with the big toys
For the past couple of weeks someone has been listing original Masters and protection masters out of the Concord Jazz catalog. These rarities are 2-track 15 ips with the original boxes too. Kind of a holy grail for some jazz r2r collectors!

Although there haven't been very many bidders the prices have gotten "up there" ...in a batch that ended today some titles achieved ending bids in excess of $500.00. I have also noticed that so far every one of these tapes has been scooped up by a single bidder!

Maybe they are a AKer?? And will see this post. Personally, I don't see why would you bid so much for tapes that were produced in the notorious "SSS" years...the tapes may be great, and then again not!

Aren't they Dolby A tapes?

I am not aware of that - if so then playback on a standard machine like Otari would not deliver the full potential?

As many r2r machines as I have I dont have a single Dolby machine. I have a commercial Hayward and Lodge Dolby reel and play it without Dolby and it sounds pretty decent.

I think these Concord masters would sound awesome if the tape is still good.
But I aint got the $$$ to find out for myself - lol. Whoever is winning them all must have plenty of disposable income... Buffet, Trump...$oros? :scratch2:
are they Jazz fans?

Most of the boxes are stamped Master or Safety (other tapes he's selling) and Dolby "A" so you would need a two track machine with dolby A to hear it correctly.

Hopefully, buyers are getting them (and the rights for them too), possibly for rerelease, at least one could hope, on Vinyl.

There are some outboard solutions for Dolby A aren't there?

I don't think possession of the master tapes give you the right to reproduce them for profit - Concord Jazz, it isn't called that anymore but the company lives on today -- cant remember the details but its all documented on the Net.

I think they would frown on any unauthorized copies from these tapes :nono:

:smoke: Like Concord Jazz stuff? You can still get these LP's used and new (and for a lot less than $500 an album)!

Anyway, I am not totally deprived of Concord Jazz -- I got a slew of Concord Jazz vinyl test pressings, many of these same recordings...Dig it, I suppose my LP's are the next closet thing to the tapes, eh? :smoke:

Like I say, no built in Dolby A, it is all outboard. An Otari is fine with a Dolby A outboard system at 15 IPS. I use one when needed. Dolby A is not compatible with Dolby B. Dolby B is meant for slow speed/narrow track use on home machines.

Concord Jazz master update.
All the bids have been cancelled?? and there were about 15 more tapes

Methinks a secret deal was reached between the bidder who has unlimited money bags and the Seller.

I bet he gets a lot of nasty emails, but that bidder wasnt gonna to be beaten by any of them anyway. I say Let em have the tapes I doubt if he will ever make a profit from them.

Poor ebay is gonna get beat out of who knows how much in fees.. boo hoo!
