I stopped off today to see what the local place had and found a set of small Kenwood bookshelf speakers. They were pretty heavy for their size, had decent binding posts, 4" higher quality woofer and decent quality looking dome tweeter. I was actually surprised at how nice they were considering they were Kenwood.

The sticker on one of them read $9.99, so I grabbed them and headed for the checkout. The cashier ( who is also the manager) rings them up...$21?? I said "No, they say $9.99" and she tells me that they are sold individually. WTF?? I tried to reason with her that these were a PAIR of speakers and ought to be sold as such...not to mention there was no price tag on the matching speaker. She insisted it must have fallen off and that the price is "each"....she wouldn't budge.
I told her to keep them and left. I'm still kinda pissed. I actually wish I would have bought one of the speakers just out of spite....they know they'd have a hard time selling a single speaker.
Anyone else heard of this? If this is policy, I'm probably done looking for stuff at GW.

That's the way it was in MN's GW's [ I just moved to TX ]. Funny thing is/was most of the cheap 90's crap speakers were priced three times as high as the old & heavy "junk" most folks didn't want to mess with which were speakers I wanted.

Doesn't make sense to sell just "one" speaker, does it? :scratch2: I personally think it's just a ploy to bait buyers and maximize the revenue. Glad my GW days are over with.

yes i have had that happen before.. but lucky for me the speakers were only $3. ea
the lady at the counter told me that they were $6 instead of the $3 like the sticker said because they were sold seperatly.. they were jensen model1 speakers..

there has been other times that i have bought from there and the speakers were sold as a pair.. so i dont now if they know what they are doing.

but i believe i have seen a sticker on one that said ($20 pair) before also..

That's an annoying bit about thrift stores, their pricing structure/standards are rather lose. I haven't run into too many problems, if only because i've never found speakers worth buying. The salvation army near me does the best thing "2 for $"(on both items), but goodwill doesn't seem to use those stickers:scratch2:.

I've questioned the practice of their pricing double items as singles, it's a little underhanded, but I don't think the intent is to cause unwanted stress:dunno:

Complaining that your local thrift store or charitable organization store is too expensive and/or never has anything interesting.

My opinion is..If they are worth it then buy them, If not walk away. Chances are you will find better later on then you will have an OK pair of speakers doing nothing.
I have gotten way past those thrift store impulse buys, They have even helped me by saying..."thats 9.99 each not for the pair".
Its their store they can do what they want.

I scored my Avid 100s for 7.97 at GW. Wasnt sure if price was for pair or single- didnt care I was getting them. When it rang up pair I thought hmm there was a pair of Fisher xp 65 or such that would be about $4 still there. So I go grab them & lady(same one) rings them up individually. What-oh those are Fishers-one of them had 2 tags on it other none.I took em but....

Some thrifts (including GW) price by the pair, others price by the piece. I found a pair of speakers that I thought would be priced by the pair but they were per each. But I had a senior discount and was not going to quibble over a few $.

Usually on the ticket they will show the number of pieces in price. Like $9.96/2 for a pair or two items.

Another time there was an old Sunbeam mixer that was priced but the bowls and beaters had no tags. The manager got called over who made a big production about tagging with the poor kid who tagged the item (he was maybe 17).

Yep, very true. Though I hate when they break up sets of things. Yesterday saw a nice wooden salad bowl set. Big salad bowl, 6 small matching bowls and a matching set of salad tongs. Sold as a set?? No, they were priced each.

Doesn't always make sense but they do what they do... Just gotta' go with the flow I say.

Funny I see this here today. I just started my GW hunting thanks to AK & last week on my forth hunt I found a nice pair of Sony book-shelf's & guess what......$9.99 each! I asked the cashier if this was right & was told thats how they price pairs, so I asked if I could buy just one left shoe because I lost one last week when I got drunk & passed out, she said NO! The best part of the story is last night I was back at the same GW & guess what.......yup some boo-boo bought just one of those Sony's. Life in a big city is really strange.

:lmao::lmao::lmao:

I'll have to remember that.

In defense of the folks that price this stuff is perhaps speakers get separated, priced and reunited on the shelf?

Thanks, fotno. I'm just on my first cup of coffee and doing my morning rounds.

Just as a general follow up statement, which means there's no reason to reopen this thread, my local GW always puts prices on each speaker. They do that for two reasons: because they frequently just have one orphan, and not a pair, and if you just want to buy one, you can.

Or, the OP can look at it this way...they were priced by the pair. The pair price was $19.98.
