Anyone heard of the Sony SS-M9 speakers?

Jon S, if you need anything cable related, I'd be happy to set you up with something for those. Gawd, I'm so green with envy! And as will all purchases for any AK member have free shipping - yes, even to Hawaii (for cables anyway)

These are superb.
Amongst the best box speakers to come out of Japan.
Surpassing even the Yamaha NS-1000M.

They were highly rated by Stereophile back in 1996.
The review isn't on their website but I still have that issue somewhere.

Two pairs would make for a killer multi-channel system.

Congratulations !

PS... found this link to a fansite

Boy I would love to see what this presumably long-gone site said. I recently took possession of the late George Purdy's SS-M9s! Anyone know if it might have been archived somewhere?

And I know this thread is 8 years old but I still have to make a correction - The Sony SS-M# series were designed and build in the US, so they didn't actually come out of japan.

Mark,
Ever heard of "The Wayback Machine?" It is an internet archive. http://archive.org/web/web.php

I checked Gpurdy's site. Only one page about the SS-M9, but he details his system, his custom built listening room, and other interests. Try putting www.gpurdy.com the Wayback search. It will show snapshots at different dates. The last one is sometime in 2005 or 2006.

Most of the Japanese speakers sold in the US have never been that good. That is accurately reflected in Stereophile's reviews. The same goes for a lot of Japanese hardware. Luxman, Accuphase, Sony ES and some others have always fared well in American publications. Most of the best Japanese gear never made it here. If you lived here you would know this.

That the Sony SSM-9 and Yamaha got good reviews should make you happy. Having heard both I'd take the Sony's over the Yamaha's any day.

To the OP IMO those Sony's can hold their own against just about anything but the ridiculously expensive stuff. even then they hold up well.

FWIW: I have and use an Accuphase T101 tuner.
