These are not electrostatic speakers as mentioned in the CL ad and they should most definitely NOT be screwed to the wall as is also suggested in the ad. My experience with 2 pairs of Tympanis is that they need lots of space behind them because they are full range dipolar speakers. They also require lots of power to "sing".
They can sound wonderful in the right room, though. I would inquire as to whether the mylar has been replaced since it has a finite life. Magnepan will do the replacement for a reasonable fee.

Not to beat the dead horse but this is a direct quote....he does refer to both electrostatic and planar magnetic technologies in his post.
i see that now, kman. i skipped ahead and was looking at this line, which now seems to me like he may have lifted from someone else's description of the speaker:
"The radiating surfaces are thin sheets of Mylar plastic, in which respect the system resembles an electrostatic design. But instead of using a varying electrostatic charge to produce diaphragm motion, these use a fine grillework of wires fastened to the surface of the radiators. An array of bar-shaped magnets provides a strong magnetic field around the wires, and if you remember your physics you'll recall that an electric current passing through a conductor in a magnetic field produces physical force."
You are right cdfac, his description is somewhat contradictory.....I wonder what possessed him to put those wooden slats on the panels....maybe he really wanted that "room divider" look?
