Basically the top-half of an AR-90, if I remember right? I wouldn't kick 'em out of bed for eating crackers, that's for sure!

No not like the AR-90 they are a 3 way system 12 inch woofer 1.5 inch mid and .75 inch tweeter. they do not have the 8 inch driver which i think makes them sound better. Same mid and tweeter diferent crossover points. less crossover coloration. Bottom end is similar to the AR-9 very deep and tight

I've never had a really good pair of speakers honestly. This will be my first good pair, and they seem to be a very good first
Hey, don't get me wrong, i think they are very good speakers the ADS 810 is a VERY good speaker as well and one I prefer over the AR91
The AR90 and 91 are totally different. The cabs on the 90's are twice as big, 2 10" woofers, 8" mid, 2" dome upper mid and a similar looking tweeter. I liked the AR9/90 better than the AR91 by a good margin. Not saying the AR91 is a bad speaker and I only heard it once on one amp. It may be better than my listening experience with a different amp and setting. For sure a very good speaker.
Hey guys, just got my woofers refoamed and boy do they sound GREAT.
I can't imagine them on a better receiver! The guy sold the pioneer so now I'm trying to hound down another.. tough finding them in the classifieds, craigslist and kijiji, but I'll find one eventually and let you guys know how it goes.

I'm just outside Toronto Ontario. Have a possibility of getting a sherwood RD-6108 for $60... any thoughts?
Seems like it might be ok with my speakers and I do plan on extending the system to 5.1 eventually.

don't know about the Sherwood, but my advice...
1- Watch the volume on them 'till you get a beefier amp. Don't want to distort, and blow the upper drivers.
2- Save a bit of cake for a rainy day, and wind up with a really, really nice setup for a fair price. Don't rush into things- wait for a great deal to arrive. It will.
3- Spend some time here reading member's advice and member's favorites. You'll find out lots of helpful stuff, with little investment. You'll walk away enrichened with knowledge, and with time, a purchased hi-fi system you likely won't be looking to upgrade for quite some time.
4- Thank your mom for originally having the good taste to buy these.
5- Lastly, congrats on refoaming them- glad it went smoothly!!! Shows a lot of fortitude and ability. And welcome to AK. And be sure to take your time to read stuff here, and make the right amp/pre-amp/integrated amp/receiver decision.

I told the guy to bring the receiver by and we're going to test it with the speakers. Maybe they'll be a gem, maybe it'll be a flop, but at least this way I'll see before I buy

Keep your eye on your local Craigslist, ebay (if you're a gamblin' man
), and when the weather improves, hit the yardsales.

Wow, Phluxed, you have a great set of speakers on your hands! As Thedelihaus said, the thing that kills a speaker is a weak amp driven beyond it's capacity.
Be patient and the deal you're looking for will come up. I save my searches as a bookmark to speed things up. There seems to be a good deal of nice equipment around your area. Good luck!

I just noticed this post and thought I'd chime in.
I've owned a nice pair of AR91s since the spring. There's a reason why they're still here even though my amplification has changed many times. Beautiful sounding speaker with impressive mid/highs. Bass is a bit lacking, but very punchy and defined. Just needs to be stronger. I won't part with this speaker unless, like Wornears, they are part payment for AR90s. If the AR91's bigger brother shares the same detailed mid/high with deeper, gutsier bass, I'm all over it. Soon....soon.
I was under the understanding that the AR91 was a 6-ohm system? Definitely takes a decent >100wpc amp to wake these up. My McIntosh MC2002 is doing a nice job right now. Being a cleaner sounding amp due to the autoformer-free DC design, it's just plain sweet with my ARs. The recent addition of C29 preamp just puts the icing on the cake.
Fix up your AR91s and you will thank yourself for it

Plenty of good receivers, amps etc. in the TO area, but they're not often on CL..... check out Canuck Audio Mart.

Look for a few weeks, something eventually shows up in the TO area. Might not be cheap, but no shipping is nice. There's also about a dozen or more Toronto based vintage audio ebay sellers. You should have no problem finding something decent in no time.
