Are these old Fisher speakers worth anything?

I'm looking to get a pair of nice speakers for a vinyl set up and I found these at a local record store for $100 for the pair. I'm sure they're probably crap, but I'd figure I'd ask before I disregard them. They had them stacked on top of each other and the model number wasn't in plain sight. Assuming these are crap, do you guys have any advice on what speakers to get for a budding audiophile? I plan on getting a Pro-ject Debut Carbon TT and the Marantz PM5004 Integrated Amp.

No, those were part of a rack system. My friend has a pair of ones similar to those, and we took them apart, to find the cheapest looking drivers you've ever seen.

And there are many speakers that you might be interested in. All depends on what kind of music you listen to, and the type of sound you prefer.

WELCOME!!! Well, they are worth taking up jogging...in teh other direction from those speakers. hang around and you will learn, grasshopper.

Pretty much anything Fisher after Sanyo bought them is pretty substandard. These are from that era. The price is insane! You can get good vintage speakers for that and less if you haunt thrift stores and garage sales. It wouldn't be really helpful to give you a list at this point. It would be much too long and, since we're talking about used equipment, there is no guarantee that you'd ever come across the speakers on the list.

If they were 40.00 they would get you by, but yes they are cheaply made speakers and will drag down the rest of your system. You would be better off finding a decent set of bookshelf speakers used in that price range bigger is not always better.

Starting Audiophile

Look for a pair of vintage large Advents on your local Craig's List. They may need replacement of the woofer surrounds which you can do easily for about $30 and be proud to have accomplished. Cost should be around $50.

Thanks for the advice guys! I plan on listening to all kinds of music but mostly rock (everything from indie to classic to metal, etc), so I don't know if that helps at all. I'd love some brand/model suggestions so I could do a little research online and see if I can find a deal on them.

What price range for speakers? Some really great vintage stuff is often on Craigslist for $100-200+. I love my JBL L26 Decades ($100).

First of all: awesome avatar. Anyways, I'm already spending about $800 on the TT and amp so I'd like to keep the speakers around $300 if possible.

BTW, I found this ad on my local Craigslist:

Large Advents the Originals - $300

Cabinets and screens beautiful. Woofers removed but intact. need to be repacked. Tweeters in place and have had previous adjustments. Was quoted 60 bucks for woofer fix by Rainbow Music. Probably apiece. Rare indeed. Sound beats anything I have ever heard but Klipsch
I even have original manuals.

Thanks!

I'm a JBL fan, so I'm not going to talk about Advents and ARs and Warfdales and such, but for something like JBL, in that price range I would suggest looking for the L19, L26, L36, L46, L50, L1, L3, L5, and L20T/T3, L60T/T3, and L80T/T3. Many others, too.

Others can comment on those Advents.

There's a Craigslist ad here for the JBL Decade L26, but he's asking for $375. You paid $100 for your pair?

I'd be more interested in the smaller real-wood veneer speakers with the crooked badges next to the Fishers. What are those?

Heh, I don't know. I think he said there was something wrong with them; he was really trying to sell me on how great the Fisher speakers were.

I'm a fan of older Fisher speakers, so believe me I have nothing against Fisher, but I would not pay even $10 for that pair. Seriously, you can spend less in a thrift shop and get better speakers. If you have $100 to spend, you can do a lot better.

Older Fisher speakers, say no newer than 1975 or so, are fine (in my opinion, some don't agree that even those are any good). But the 1980s and 1990s Fisher speakers were just the cheapest possible junk.

Good luck though! Keep looking, you'll find something nice for your money.

Yup. $375 is nuts. There is a pair around here (California) listed for $200 I think. I think $120 - 250 might be fair. For $375 I'd be looking at L36 Decades or some of the others I mentioned. (L50, L5, L60T/T3, and L80T/T3 in particular.)

Or offer him $200 for those L26s.

Go back and tell him you really don't like great speakers; you like crappy, broken ones. Like the ones with the crooked badges. Find out what they are......:scratch2:
