Asking for advice

I come here and read about gear often but rarely post anything. I am the second owner of a Marantz 2265 which I have owned for 22 years and love it. It needs work to continue using it. There is nobody near me to restore it. I was looking on ebay for something else until I can have the restore done. I came across a Sansui AU-5900 that is supposed to be recapped current bid is $400 plus shipping item 282859549633 and a Kenwood KA-7300 with KT-815 recapped $400 plus shipping item 253460882382. Would either of these be worth taking a chance on at those prices? Thanks in advance. Please forgive and correct me if this post is in the wrong place.

Something to think about. I know there is a place in Austin, it's name slips my mind, that will restore your unit for around the price of these items you're looking at. I'm sure there are some in Houston as well.

A google search, some phone time, and a drive might be in your best interest.

My problem with those options is I am a C4 quadraplegic and no way to get there and back. I read about a place in Austin, the name I do not remember but I called the place and the tech/owner said he had never heard of a model 2265. I don't feel comfortable sending it there although I realize the place I called may not be the same place you are thinking of.

Houston is 3 hours 1 way and Austin is 5 hours 1 way from me so shipping is my only option. I just can't afford to waste money buying a dud and I would like to have something to listen to during the interrum should I find someone to restore the Marantz and if I can buy a good piece of equipment it would be used in another room after restoration.

Flint, you might be able to FedEx your 2265 to any number of reputable places and they'd FedEx it back to you. I can imagine that someone on here might be able to provide some avenue to get it done. I believe your Marantz is probably better than those you had listed...in my opinion....
Good luck and regards from way way North...
I would rather someone on here do the work. I did get a quote from someone on here a couple of years ago but don't remember who it was nor the price. I remember it being someone in Las Vegas.

Have you considered some of the new gear from Yamaha, Marantz, NAD and others ?

For the money you are willing to spend there are several options that would give excellent performance, increased convenience (remote, Bluetooth etc) and a warranty.

Here's another thought. I can sympathize your not being without sound while your Marantz is being properly restored. I see you're a subscriber here Rather than blow big $$$ on those fairly expensive "recaps" from total strangers, why not look at this site's Barter Town and see if you can find something considerably less expensive from one of our members to tide you over until your 2265 is returned renewed?

What wmgwizard said. If you're looking at unknown $500 items on ebay, then you should be able to get a very nice new unit.

I have read up on newer products but not had the opportunity to audition anything. I bought a Sansui receiver, Technics turntable with a pair of Advents from a neighbor going through a divorce for $300 in 1977 and was hooked instantly. I just love the sound of vintage gear like my Marantz and am concerned about the sound from newer gear. My HT setup consists of a Marantz SR6006, Monitor Audio Silver 6 floor standing, FX surrounds, C150 center, and Polk Audio PSW10, Samsung Bluray/DVD, KDLINKS HD720 media player and LG 49LH5700 on a network. This is great for movies but not even close to 2 channel cranking on classic rock and country at high volumes. Different gear, different application different sound but you all know that just voicing my concerns about new 2 channel gear. I just don't know hence the need for advice or opinions.

Great idea.

I have heard some of the newer Yamaha gear as well as some NAD.

Granted they were in "showroom" conditions not actual living spaces but the sound was quite good.

The nice thing about the new gear and companies like Crutchfield, Amazon and others is they have fairly liberal return policies; if you don't like it, just send it back.
