AT-LP120 & AT-LP1240 both on sale today.

On this topic -- does anyone know if the platter used on the 120 and 1240 is the same? Sometimes, depending on the angle in pictures, the 1240's platter seems "thicker" than the 120's...do both turntables use the same platter?
You mean you don't know!? And you were the one telling ME about LP120 product quality. :p

No, the platters aren't the same. I know because I own an AT-LP1240-USB

Indeed, listen to Daver -- I had this discussion with him over at AVS, and his 1240 is REALLY nice...

How's your 1240 been, Daver?

I've been happy with it once I got the AT440MLa cart on it - it seems like a great match and no complaints here! Thanks for asking. :)

I don't use any of the DJ features on the 1240 - sort of forgot about them. Also, the platter seems very solid and weighty IMO.

To the OP hearing an "airy" sound from the receiver's phono input when nothing's plugged in, my guess is it's the internal pre-amp boosting a nothing signal. Does it go away when something's plugged in and grounded to the phono input?

No, it stays the same. I've even turned phono off and switched the 1240 to line and connected via aux to my receiver. Still the same issue with the white noise and feedback to the speakers when the table and or tonearm is touched.

Now you're telling ME about product quality...and yet have stated that you never held the 120's platter but KNOW that the 1240's is DIFFERENT?!?!
Calm down, I get it that you don't like the "bashing" of your table. But, the poster you are attacking did not state he never had a 120, quite the contrary.

Why does everyone have to get so wound up - it's a turntable! Put on a nice record and relax...

How high is the receiver volume when you hear this? Phono inputs are not the most quiet of inputs in my experience. If you have the volume up there will be more noise than on other inputs.

You can hear it at a low volume if you get close. I don't know. Maybe it's normal and I'm trippin? I'm honestly more worried about the feedback issue.

I was quasi-joking in my "tone," particularly in the end of the statement there...

With regard to the poster I was "attacking" -- funny, you didn't see the arrogance or pick up on the aggressiveness in HIS reply (even though I WAS NOT attacking him in response) -- he stated that he never HELD a 120's platter yet is sure that the 1240's is different; THAT'S what I was responding to.
Arrogant and aggressive? Wut? Ok maybe I should have been more specific. I have not compared it to the 120 and the platter of the 1240 seems lighter and of less quality than that of a 1200.

Fair enough, I guess we are not reading the same thread, I know what I read and trust my reading comprehension. Enjoy your holiday weekend.

Reading different threads? No, we're reading the same thread...so perhaps your reading comprehension isn't quite as up to snuff as you think -- he clearly stated (and then accused me of questioning HIS knowledge of an AT-LP120's quality, ironically) that he never PICKED UP a 120's platter, but he knows the 1240's platter is different just because he owns one (a 1240).

Enjoy your weekend too -- and stay away from those firecrackers!
His posts clearly state he used to own a 120. Peace out.

I originally brought up the COMPARISON BETWEEN THE 120 and 1240 IN TERMS OF PLATTER DIFFERENCES. Then, YOU said:

I have not held the 120 platter

Then went on to state:

You mean you don't know!? And you were the one telling ME about LP120 product quality. :p

So how can I not infer that you were COMPARING THE 120's PLATTER and the 1240's platter?

You are confused, bud. You have quoted a reply from 2 different people. Poinzy and myself. I have never owned a 120. That was Poinzy.

It was a mixup based on a communication snafu; move on, nothing to see or fan the flames of here...

Chill. You got hasty and made a mistake on a public forum. No big deal, but don't be surprised if you get a little ribbing for it.

Are you kidding me? I didn't get "hasty" -- what happened was, Blasting responded to something meant for someone that was being condescending towards me and there was a communication rift BASED ON THAT little snafu. It wasn't a "mistake;" you make it sound like someone accused another individual of a horrendous crime of which the person was innocent -- it was a MIXUP that could have happened to ANY ONE OF US.

I still stand by defense to Poinzy's original misguided and confusing comment.

As I said -- stop fanning the flames of this situation. It's enough.

LOL - this really got to you, didn't it?

Let's get back to the topic at hand shall we?

Where'd we leave off? Noise in the phono channel?

I can hear noise from my phono too. But the volume's gotta be higher than I normally listen in order to hear it. I've also had noise from other electronics nearby. The TV is the worst - can't do TV and the phono at the same time the way I've got things set up.

So - is your noise audible at normal listening levels or only when you turn up the volume to higher levesl? Have you tried moving gear/cables to see if your phono interconnects are picking up interference?
