I've got one of these with an Electro Voice replacement stylus. I'm using it on the turntable in my second system and it's more than satisfactory but I have a question.

I believe it's possible to upgrade the stylus on it to, for instance, an ATN14Sa Shibata stylus. That would certainly improve the performance but would I end up essentially with an AT14Sa or are there important performance differences in the two cartridge bodies?

No, same bodies. You'd have an AT14Sa.

Howard, I don't think you're right, 'cause the AT14Sa body has significantly lower impedance and inductivity...

The AT14Sa, being a CD-4 cartridge, prolly was made to work into a 100 kohm load and the AT13Ea, being a stereo cartridge, was prolly made to work into a 47 kohm load :^)

How much audible difference this would make, Ich habe keine idee.

Neither do I but the Cartridge Data Base site lists the load impedance for both at 47kohms. Load impedance is quite different: 1,200 ohms for the AT-13Ea but only 500 ohms for the AT-14Sa.

I wonder whether the AT-13Ea body with the AT-14Sa stylus would actually be better for 2 channel than the AT-14Sa with the Shibata stylus. Don't ask me why I'm wondering cuz I don't know.

Ya, generally, the DCR of a stereo cartridge is around 1 - 1.2 kohms and the DCR of a quad cartridge is around 400 - 500 ohms.

The cartridge dB may be in error here as all CD-4 cartridges were made to work into a 100 kohm load. This was the spec.

No need to be sorry, Howard, as I don't think it makes a whole lotta love... er... difference as the CD-4 engineers eventually found. Low capacitance of the system to avoid attenuation of the ultrasonic frequencies is much more important. That, and the trackability of the stylus, of course.

They are but I must be in the minority in that I like me Ea stylus better on my 14SA same for the 12XE stylus on an AT12SA.
To my ears they have more bottom end and punch, plus the output seems a little higher as well.

Howard: No worries, as has been mentioned, the needles can be swapped nevertheless, just the result isn't exactly the same.

Doug: Actually, the load impedance spec from CartridgeDB is correct, 'cause AT used to state 47 kOhm in the spec tables for the CD4 Quadro models, too - but with an extra footnote that these were as well compatible with 100 kOhm loading for CD4...

And on a sidenote (to improve your German ): Our "Idee" and the English "idea" can be so-called "false friends" in some cases, because our "Idee" refers more to genuine, new thoughts that involve some creativity - for example an idea for a birthday present... Whereas if it's more knowledge related (and especially in negation), we rather use "Ahnung" or "Plan" (with the latter being more modern and colloquial in that use). For example: "I asked the mechanic why the engine had failed, but he had no idea." -> "Ich fragte den Mechaniker, warum der Motor ausgefallen war, aber er hatte keine Ahnung."

Well, and to make it even more complicated we also have a synonym for "Idee", namely: (der) Einfall. But that word also is a synonym for invasion. So the context again is very important for the correct translation:

"Der Einfall der Hunnen: schrecklich..." -> "The invasion of the Huns: terrible..."

"Der Einfall der Hunnen: Pferde nutzen zwecks besserer Mobilität." -> "The idea of the Huns: use horses for better mobility."
