Attention Fairchild Freaks!

248s are v nice indeed, but not being designed as stereo thus having add'l circuitry to integrate is a negative. We had 2 of them at one time, along w/ 2 pr of 255a, bought from collector friends in N CA. We feel the current prices are high for what they are, along with a lot of vintage stereo stuff! In our opinion even some properly restored Scott tube EL-84 integrated amps that we've had performed overall at least as well in our system, in our 14 x 20 listening room with various efficient Klipsch, Altec Valencia's, etc. anyway. YMMV. Of course our ears are getting old. We sold off all the FCs and kept the Scott 222D (restored at Audio Classics). So much vintage audio pricing is based on prestige, exclusivity & so on. Still, they are way cool looking (love the orange/beige) and desirable units. Sherman Fairchild was born and grew up near here. Reporting from the home of McIntosh... Binghamton NY (we've had all that tube stuff too, Mi200/K107, Mc75, Mc60, Mc225 etc). As I said, YMMV!

For those that are interested

Even with the mis-matched faceplate colors between the 245s and the stereo adapter (246 or 247, I never can remember the number), that 248 is gorgeous.

Wish them goodluck getting that even for a 412-ed. basic shell and nothing else.Id rather have a 750.Still have my mccurdy transcription t/t with built in monitoramps that i will reatore someday

Best I've been able to figure, there were probably less than 100 412-EDs built. That electronic four-speed controller doubled the price of the basic 412, which itself was just about the most expensive table on the market in the late 1950s.

No one saw this beauty when it was available?

The SA-12 is gorgeous by itself, and I suspect designed by Raymond Lowey (even though I've never seen a formal attribution), but even the box is classy and designed to coordinate with the 245/248 styling.

Of note - in the brochure accompanying that NOS SA-12 arm, the 412-ED isn't even listed. Just the 412-1 and 412-2. The SA-12 was introduced in 1959 or 1960, which would put the lifespan of the -ED unit at about a year, at most.

Very interesting (and cosmetically rough) pair of 275s on eBay (no affiliation): https://www.ebay.com/itm/116033107125

First I’ve seen of the 275 with green underchassis. No serial numbers, no stenciling on the back of the transformer case. No nameplate in the front, although one looks like it may have originally had it. Missing bottom covers. Supposedly are functional, although I wouldn’t have the courage to fire those up in that condition, even with a variac. Seller claims they are prototype units.

Green underside was from the early units. The circuit was also an early version as Dave G points out in his great restoration thread.

Yup - looked as a single yo me first
For a pair - even though beat up- the price is a bit more palatable

Thanks - I was wondering about that! A bunch of the components on the tag board do appear to be original, but different that what I’ve seen, so that makes sense that these are the early versions.

247 would be the correct number. The 246 was a amplifier using a pair of 807 output tubes .More info here on https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/fairchild_246_amplifier.html
A couple pictures attached.
Fwiw my 248 has matched white faceplates on the 245's but the 247 has the cream colored faceplate.I'd love to find someone with the opposite problem and trade someday to have it all matching.
