Audax Factory Recommended Equivalents

Found the Audax (very French) website. Looking for substitute for the original dome tweeters in the Snell Type A's.

They specifically state that their old hd12x9d25 can be replaced with either their tw025a0 or tw025k3. Does anyone out there have any experience w/ either of these? I have the spec sheets for all three of the above, but that's kinda' like reading Martian to me.

What's the general status of Audax in today's audio world, anyway?

I think they are still pretty good quality.
I would check Madisound speaker components and see if they still carry that line. They would have your answer.

Have used the TW025A0, and can vouch it will work as a replacement. Same as was used in some early Vandersteens, and I've used that exact unit as a replacement in those, with good results (exact sonic match).

IIRC, you can swap out the faceplates... the new one is a round flange, but I THINK you can swap your rectangular flange onto the new tweeter.

Regards,
Gordon.

www.cadaudio.dk says:

"HD12X9D25 = TW025A0 (square faceplate can be mounted) or TW025K3"

and shows a picture of the 'K with a square faceplate. So I'm hoping I don't have to start fabricating faceplates. The 'A and 'K have slightly different specs, but like I said, it's a bit foreign to me. I've got an email in to Madisound so we'll see.

I've got kind of a mess on my hands because I'm missing a faceplate on one side, the tweeter section having been butchered by some idiot.

Also, Gordon, maybe you know. The TW025A is available in either an 8 or a 4 ohm version. The Snell Type A is rated at an overall 4 ohms. But that doesn't mean necessarily that the tweeters are 4 ohm, right? It turns out that I don't have an original tweeter in either the L or R unit. So even if I could perform some kind of a test, there's nothing to test. Any suggs?

The tweeter in the A was a 4 ohm unit. Then you have the difussion clip to custom make, if you again want the sonic accuarcy/ signature of a very exact made speaker system!
The pics I set you show pretty good detail on how that looked. That was part of the reason why these were set up as left and right types.
Good luck-

DC - O.K. then... A 4 ohm it is. In my intermittently foggy memory I thought your earlier correspondence indicated you weren't sure of the ohmage... or maybe that was the mids you were talking about. ('sure wouldn't be the first time I remembered something incorrectly) How do you know the ohms of the tweeters, anyway? And speaking of ohms - Was/is there a choice in the AD5060? Because I just figured if I found some I should grab 'em, not realizing they might come in 4 and 8 ohm versions... yikes)

So, we're talkin' the TW025A in a 4 ohm version, rectangular faceplate, home fabricated diffusion clip w/ partial padding, the AD5060/SQ8 mids from my eBay purchase (those should be here any day. Not even sure if the cans are gonna stay on the rear or not)... and while I'm at it, I guess it'd be a good idea to replace the crossover caps & resistors too, eh? Well, this'll keep me tinkerin' for awhile.

I remember the tweeters because I had one tweeter toasted and one OK, but had a hard time locating the 4 ohm version. The mids were fine so I did not need to measure them. You probably will not need to use the cup that the mids come with, I do not recal their being one.
Have you looked at the xovers yet? That is a sea of components you are considering!! I mean it would be great to replace those 20 year+ caps that might have excelled their tolerances, but get ready to spend some $$$ to do so.
I have not seen pit bulls tear into scrap meat quite like you have done for these!
DC

DC - No, I haven't ventured that deeply into the guts that I've seen the crossover. I just thought it would be a good idea, and I'm sure it would be, but if it's that big a mess, I don't need much inspiration to put things off indefinitely (just ask the little bride). Maybe that's gonna' wait for another burst of energy.

As far as 4 ohm tweeters, I'm lookin' @ what CAD Audio (Denmark - www.cadaudio.dk/audaxunits.htm ) says are equivalent Audax units, brand new for about 35 bucks a piece - available in either 4 or 8 ohm versions.

And hey, I thought I read on this site that there was no reliable way to test speaker impedance. What's the trick?

B

You can easily test speakers static DC impedance/ resistance with a Volt Ohm Meter- now as for testing a speakers impedance at a given frequency- then you need more specific tooling/ electronics to do that.

I'm dumb, but getting a bit un-dumber.

You mean, for example, on these Audax tweeters I'm looking at:

Nominal impedance 8 ohms
DC resistance 5.8 ohms

I'm gettin' it. So a nom. imp. 4 ohm unit reads probably what... 2.x ohms dc resistance or so?
