Audio Technica ATS13 Stylus Question

ROACHED
I have 2 ATPro13e 's, one is just the body with no Stylus. The one I use has a stock ATS13 (201-DEM) nude elliptical. I'm going to purchase a new stylus and see that Turntable needles has listed a AT/Technicraft TCN4000 Linear contact as a replacement for the ATS14
Audio Technica numbers for me can be a bit confusing. Will the TCN4000 line contact fit the Pro13e and be an upgrade over the stock elliptical? They also have a Hyperelliptical aftermarket copy for $97.95 vs. $129.95 for the Technicraft. Anyone have any idea of the quality of the Hyperelliptical?
Thanks in advance
lini where are you :)

Interesting, usually the best would be my personal choice.

Some user find the top end Audio Technica cartridge and "top end" LC o Linear Contact stylus combination to be too "shrill" for enjoyment.

The Audio Technica AT Pro 13 with a HE - hyper elliptical stylus could be an unusually enjoyable combination.

My Audio Technica AT 95 HE is a similar combination.

Most HE on the market are from well known source, should be of good quality. :)

Thanks B, Shrill is not good! I just got over a bout of Shrill:eek: with a SAS. I agree the aftermarket HE might be a good combo. I was just kinda wondering if it was a nude mount? I'm guessing it is because it says it's copy of the original.

I hope that it is, but not expecting it to be.

Personally I haven´t heard that styli, but it really seems good. Many seem to think that AT´s LC are better sounding than the MR. If I didn´t have so many other stylii myself I would pick one up.
If You look at the spec it´s a nude mounted on a tapered cantilever.

Yeah, it's very nice, I'm just a little heasatant to go for it after the Jico SAS on a V15iii I just got finished fighting with. I couldn't tame it:whip:

I have both the ATS13 and ATS14, they are both very good. But as I said I haven´t heard this one.

So the ATS14 will fit on the 13 and they are offering the TCN4000 as a replacement for ATS14. So the Technicraft 4000 should fit the AT Pro13e. Am I correct in my thoughts?

Yes they will fit the same cartridge. The styli is exactly the same, but with a different diamond.

This is a tough one. I have, not only a Technicraft TC4000 cartridge and [genuine] stylus, but also a TC2000. I have an AT13E as well. I tried putting the TCN2000 on the AT13E and though it snapped into place, I noticed its magnets didn't go as deeply into the space between the pole pieces as the ATS13's did. More important, the magnets weren't centered between the fore and aft pole pieces, as the ATS13's were. When I tried snapping in my TCN4000 stylus, the magnets wound up jammed against the aft pole pieces, immobilizing the cantilever.

I emphasize that this is only with my one AT13E body and two Technicraft styli, and may not apply to everyone or anyone else, but since Technicraft bodies have recently sold on eBay for ~$15 plus ship, my recommendation would be to get the TCN4000 stylus while you can and go hunting for a Technicraft body. Those bodies are not all exactly the same electrically, but the difference is minor, and they are the same physically.

I know that doesn't help your present situation, and there's a chance it may not even apply, but I felt obliged to mention my results.

Thank you, I have read where others have mentioned the missalinment between the magnets and pole pieces when swapping around AT stylus. I agree these won't last forever and the Technicraft body would be an option if it didn't quite fit properly.

They're both the real thing, but I'd contact stereoneedles to see if they have that ATS13, another excellent stylus (though not with a line-contact diamond), in stock.

61s: Sorry, I don't think those Technicrafts ever made it over here, so I can't comment on these...

Personally I'm quite a fan of AT's "13 level" sharp ellipticals, though - so I think in you situation I'd rather check, whether Stereoneedles still can deliver the ATS13 for not quite 60 bucks, and if so, grab two, three or four of these...

Greetings from Munich!
