Aussie Pink Floyd Show

My wife and I saw the Australian Pink Floyd show at the State Theater in Minneapolis last night. Check them out on the web, they've been putting on PF shows for 20 years and were invited by David Gilmour to play his birthday, so they have some cred.

The show started promptly at 8 with an animated 'roo hopping over to his record shelf, selecting a DSOM album, and playing it on his vintage Thorens table and Marantz 2225! Next up were selections from Wish You Were Here and Animals. After the break (20 minutes exactly, as promised), he popped a cassette into his Sony Walkman titled "Floyd Mix".

They did a great job with the covers, and each musician was fabulous - from lead guitar, to bass, even the background vocals were awesome.

Do see the show if they swing through your town.

I've wondered how some of these bands sound.

I've had two experiences ... seeing a Rush tribute that sounded good, but you had to turn around they were so ugly.

Dark Star Orchestra makes a living out of re-creating Dead shows. That guy that does the Bob Weir parts is really creepy. I think his name is Rob Eaton.

I saw both these shows at Summerfest, so if you don't like them you can just wander around and see something else without worrying about the admission price if it really sucks.

I saw them in Chicago last year and was very impressed. Granted, it takes a bit of imagination to really be transported away from the fact that it's ultimately just a cover band, but they really nailed the sound for the most part. And having seen (and enjoyed) Waters solo, even half of that was with a cover-guitarist, so to speak.

I thought the animation was really dated, though. Looked like early '90s blocky digital graphics when I saw them.

I've got tics to see them in Miami this Saturday. I've heard that they put on a great show - musically anyway...

"Just a cover band" is what scares me.

I wanted to see the Roger Waters show at Summerfest in 2007, just to compare it to the Gilmour "On an Island" show I saw at the Rosemont Theater. I work away from my home, and can't get to any M-W shows.

Did I go expecting a PF-level performance? no.... and 90's era animation aside, the band was tight and did a very nice job with everything they played. I abhor the megabucks arena shows, but at $49.50 a seat for this one, I was very happy.

The stoner 'roo was amusing..........

For a cover band, they definitely turn it up to 11.

For the moments you can suspend belief they're really good.

Well I've seen both Pink Floyd (the Division Bell Tour) and Aussis Floyd (now 3 times) and I can tell you the show is better with Aussie Floyd. The music is equal. I will say every time I have seen Aussie Floyd it has been in a MUCH better venue then the BC PLACE where we saw Pink Floyd.

Aussie Floyd has played at David Gilmours Birthday party and Roger has worked with them.

The show last night in Miami (Filmore/Jackie Gleason Theater) was outstanding. I would highly recommend this show to anyone - if you have a chance to go, you will not be dissapointed.

The musicianship and setlist were great and the sound quality was fantastic. These guys can play. They had 9 musicians on stage and positively NAILED every song that they played. Not just the note for note cover, they really captured the "feel" of these tunes.

The background singers were fantastic. I tell you "Great Gig In The Sky" was simply stunning - talk about chills.

It did not matter one bit that this was a "cover band". For me, there is no way that I will ever hear those songs played live at that level of musical talent.

I guess they mix up the setlist from show to show. Last night, they started out with DSOTM "Breath" then "Time"; continued with WYWH "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" then "Welcome To The Machine"; then did Animals "Pigs On The Wing" and "Dogs". They took a 20 minute break and then continued with a second set of a wide variety of tunes. They did 4 or 5 from The Wall ending the show with "Comfortably Numb" and the encore was "Run Like Hell".

They started promptly at 8:00 and ended at 11:00 - a solid 2:40 with the 20 minute break.

This show was well worth every penny - don't let the "cover band" thing deter you from going. These guys are phenomenal.
