Awesome JBL Summit attic find and restoration

Happy wife, happy life. Show her a couple of finished EBay sales (only after you and she get to listen to her favorite music on them).

Quoted for truth, absolutely do the listening session first. Otherwise, she will be wanting to sell instead of letting you keep them.

Sorry that it’s been a little while, my wife has asked me to get several things around the house done before we host Christmas for the whole family.

So I went to put the surrounds on the woofers and noticed one had pretty severe spider sag I’m assuming. I could not get the cone to move in a linear smooth motion. So I decided to recone both drivers. As far as the crossover, I’m going to leave the original in and intact. I think in the next month or two I’ll order parts to build the crossovers from Nelson Pass.

Here they are in the process of the frames being cleaned.

I also decided to polish the lips of the frame, one in the photo is done and one is not.

Here the soft parts are assembled and coils shimmer as the spider glues up

I played a 30Hz signal through them for a few hours to soften the suspension and they sounded very clean from that limited play time.

Yes, good job! I love seeing a great old pair of JBL's brought back to life. The only thing that would make me feel better about it would be that they belonged to me.

What a neat find. Congrats !

I got to see a pair at our local vintage shop, Bob asked me....want me to fire them up for you. One of the few times I said no...nope. I kinda knew what was going to happen if I heard them.

Nice work so far, those woofers look awesome !

I own a mint pair and I'm sure .that if done right, your's will look and sound just as good...awesome find, take the time to do it right :)

We haven't seen any recent updates on your great restoration project. You made a fantastic find and I'm sure that I'm not the only one looking forward to see your final results. Best of luck and thanks for sharing this with us.

Sorry for the lack of updates, I’ve been quite busy. Too busy haha. So I wanted to do some cabinet work. Over half of the grill posts were broken off at the front baffle. I removed all of the posts and opened up the holes a little. I them used epoxy and buried some neodymium magnets into the front baffles and covered them with Ruge Gold (think bondo). I have a habit of getting into the flow of working and forgetting to take pictures. Sorry. I also took care of other body filler work on the front baffles, back and base.

I was missing a piece of the walnut strip that goes on the top next to the glass. One thing to catch here is the front needed to be cut at a slight angle to match the front baffle. I have a ton of walnut in my wood racks, so wasn’t too hard to find a good piece to mill down.

I used a card or cabinet scraper to get it sit perfectly level with the bullnosed portion. I was thinking of staining it to match, but from all the reading I did at the Lansing Heritage site, it seems it’s best not to and let the turpentine in the finish I apply do it’s job turning the walnut orangish red.

Next it was time to sand and tape off all of the veneer and paint with black over the rest of the cabinets. It’s cold in my workshop so I painted inside. My wife is an amazingly patient and understanding person. The living room was taped off for like a week.

After that was finished I removed all of the tape and paper.

It was then time to start applying the finish. I used the recommended JBL finish, mix of boiled linseed oil and turpentine. I did two coats, wet sand with oil at 600 grit, another two coats along with another wet sand, and lastly a final coat.

Sorry for the poor lighting, my house was built in 1929 and one of the next projects is overhead lighting.

Now I wanted to move onto the mids. I removed all of the old foam and replaced it. I also reused the old felt that was in there.

I then moved to the paper pads that sit under the glass. I’m not sure what was attached to the cardboard, but it’s long broken down. I glued some felt to it and the glass sits at the perfect height.

I also replaced the original binding posts. The original spring style are horrible and replace them on any JBL pair I get.

I installed the tweeters and the mids and that is how they sit now. I still have to do some work with the grills.

Now to my questions. Should I apply a wax over the BLO I did, just to finish it off? I have Johnson’s and Briwax. I think the Briwax would be too harsh as it has toluene in it to thin the wax, I think I’ve read they suggest the finish being a year old before applying. The Johnson wax would be fine to go over it now.

Next question: before I mount the woofers I wanted suggestions on evening out the sheen on the front baffle. There are spots that are slightly shinier than others even though I was careful to coat evenly. I tried rubbing with a paper bag, but that would take forever. Should I use steel wool or a Brillo pad? I’m almost done and this is holding me up from listening to them.

On the grills I already have the magnets mounted, just need to make two cross supports that were lost in time. I’ve decided to use the original crossovers for now as they use mylar caps, but plan to make some outboard Nelson Pass designed crossovers for a later time.

On the finish (I use exactly the same BLO wet sand (800) on my L200s), I do not use wax, just oil it once a year or so.
(My parents had some Eames walnut chairs that they treated lovingly with johnsons paste wax for 40 years, and it ruined the veneer, clogging it up with build up. So I don't use paste wax on any wood/veneer furniture).
Others more knowledgeable than I may chip in, but that's my take on it, anyway.
BEAUTIFUL WORK, BTW!!!! Thanks for sharing.
PS. What did you use to replace the old foam in the mids with?
