B-2 on Shopgoodwill

Come on Asmo, time to show some good will splurge like there’s no tomorrow … LOL
I would! But it's pick up only in Minnesota. And, things on Goodwill go for 1.5 to 2 x what you can purchase one from ebay for... watch!

Although pick up only severly limits the available buyers, so maybe the B-2 will go for reasonable money, but the C-2 and Luxman stuff will go for way to much. I guess good for Goodwill.

They have the C-2 as well and a couple Luxman DC amps/Pre amps

Athanasios
Yeah, I saw the C-2 as well, but secretly hoping to bid on that... That Luxman amp is a very cool industrial design. I have not owned any Luxman, but their designs seem really inspired and well executed.

LOL …

C-2, C-2a, and Luxman usually go for very high prices here too, more than I’m willing to pay. Luxman is supposed to be extremely good, have never owned one, they look very solid sturdy designs. Good luck on the C-2.

Why do you think that C-2's go for big bucks in Japan while C-4's go for dirt cheap?

Honest answer? I’m not sure, but I think its detailed Phono connection settings (load resistance & capacitance for MC cartridges) has something to do with it. C-4, C-2, C-6 and many other models don’t have those.

Also, C-2a sells for a lot higher than C-2. I’ve never had a C-2 or C-2a before, every time I get ready to bid on one, the price skyrockets to levels I’m not prepared to pay, I have other things to get first. Currently using a C-6 I overhauled recently, I seriously doubt if a C-2a sounds that much better, if at all … I have been wrong before, LOL.

You may be right on the lack of MC settings on the C-4. That is its one downfall, otherwise it can surprise you, especially the line stage. You just need to watch the hardoff website and be ready to dial those digits. There's a C-2a in Ebetsu/Hokkaido right now.

That’s the symptom of the early eighties, cost cutting became the norm and functions were shed off like crazy along with the introduction of plastic and other non-metal parts.

LOL … I think Hardoff are thieves and so are most of the second hand shops here, you just get ripped off in a big way. I usually look at auctions, that’s where you can find value from time to time.

After this exchange I went to town to get food and stopped by, you guessed it, Hardoff to see what was happening. Last time I went in was two years ago. They had two C-2s for roughly $900 each plus some other overpriced stuff. I thought thanks, but no thanks and bolted. Such are the second hand stores in Japan … I’ll stick to auctions, much better return and more exciting. I can get a C-2 for $300 to $400 in auctions almost any day …

...and more exciting.

That's true. How can their annoying theme song compete with the endless 5 minute bid war interval of attrition? ; )

There are some deals still to be found at hardoff but over the last 5 years they have definitely grown more savvy about market pricing and are somewhat more in-line with hifido. They do claim maintenance on many items. Auctions are cool but can be a serious gamble on functionality. You definitely have to know what you're getting into. If you have the ability to make repairs then it's a goldmine for sure. When you see the atrocious conditon of some items on ebay vs price, you wish people in the US knew just how plentiful these items really are in Japan.

Yes, with any of these places, you just never know, can’t right them off I agree. There’s AudioUnion too but they are just like Hardoff with a different name. With hardoff, the repair shop is part of the show and you can see them work on stuff.

They just don’t know and can not imagine it either. It’s a waste of time trying to explain Japan to those who haven’t seen it, you just get empty looks, they don’t know what you’re talking about. LOL, it’s like going to another planet and then trying to tell others how it was. Anyway, back to bidding … a C-1, 2 B-2s, 1 B-2x, a GT-2000, a C-4, and a few other things coming up, and that’s just this weekend. So many Yamahas, so little time (and money).

Yeah, I check daily. A good chunk of my gear is from the auction. Now it's a matter of look but don't bid to stay out of the doghouse with the Mrs. My dream would be a van to hit up all of the overstocked countryside second hand stores and a shipping container to load them up. Hopefully visit Japan again next year.

LOL …

Couple of years ago visiting my wife’s hometown, her mom kept telling me about an audio store in town, village would be a better description. We found the place, called the guy up and asked him if we could go visit because he was closed for holidays. He met us at the shop and make a long story short, never ever in my miserable life had I seen such collection of professional grade vacuum tube amplifiers … it was astounding, as in unbelievable. There was this 80 year old guy and his audio gallery, all his work. Countryside is where the action is in this country, big cities are overrated. LOL again.
