Loud noise will do it as well, one year we were camping in Algonquin in a tent trailer. One of the bears came through our campsite during the night. Earlier our son had backed away to get a photo of us at the fireplace. My ex said "Brian walk over here slowly, there is a baby bear behind you" Baby bear my a**, it was about 3 feet high at the shoulders. I banged on the fireplace with a log and it took off.

One day we went to another campsite where they rented canoes. The owner told us that a camper had pulled his cot ow of the tent and was sleeping in the sun in his bathing suit. He woke up quite suddenly when a bear started licking his bare chest!
