Beatles re-releases

Drew loves Thin Lizzy
Went to my local Wal-Mart today to see what they have. No box sets, no displays, but they did have some of the individual cd's. Single discs were $13.88, White Album & Past Masters were 19.88. Bought quite a few, listening to them now. Too early to give an in depth review, but on first listen they definitely sound better than the 1987 releases.

Thanks for the early review. I've got the mono box on the way, but will be heading to the local K-Mart ($11.98) for "Beatles for Sale" and "Pepper" in stereo.

Ditto on the mono box. Anything has got to sound better than the '87 CDs.

I ordered the Mono box set, then Abbey Road and Let It Be from Amazon... I'm debating ordering Sgt. Pepper's (or buying it local) since the reviewer at Tone Circle (I believe that's what the place is) favored the stereo version over the mono one, AND it is my favorite Beatles album. I'm rather anxious to hear the mono releases, I am fortunate to own a good condition mono Sgt. Pepper's vinyl, and the mix is definitely different. I'll see how the cards fall... I will post my impressions once I have a chance to listen to most of the CDs. :thmbsp:

One interesting thing is that I grew up listening to my parents' mono Beatles albums (up to Sgt Pepper, IIRC) so the stereo mixes have never sounded right to my ears. I would love to spring for the Mono box, but I don't have that kind of cash. :tears: Oh well, at least I inherited those Beatles albums from my parents...

??????

We've got some remastered CDs on the dock, but they're tagged with a 9/9 street date??
Our price (Costco) is marked at $12.99 for the singles (Peppers, Abbey, Revolver, Rubber) and $15.99 for Pastmasters and White.

The early Beatles stereo mixes were awful. The four lads in one speaker and all the instruments in the other. A compelling argument for a mono switch.

The later albums in stereo is a must, IMHO. They put a lot of effort into the stereo mixes and that is what they intended.

Yep, your local branch of the clowns from Hooterville is in street date violation as the release date is 9/09/09.

Starbucks is carrying several of the new releases.

Selling one before tomorrow pretty much carries the death penalty.

What release was the beginning of the intended stereo mixes?

I thought CD release dates were almost always on Tuesdays. My local Wal-Mart is being remodeled & everything is out of sorts. I almost missed the Beatles albums on the first pass through. Maybe a happy accident? :music:

What's "later"? After Peppers???

I know mono mixes of Revolver, Rubber Soul and Pepper's are pretty highly sought.

I admit I don't know when the stereo mixes got better but certainly by Sgt. Peppers. I'll have to break out my Rubber Soul and give it a listen.

That is strange. The mixes in stereo do a lot of odd things on purpose. But maybe the "meanings" of the songs carry over better in mono?

OK quick impressions on the CD's I've listened to so far (on headphones at work).

Beatles For Sale - my favorite of the early albums. Very detailed, hearing little things I don't remember hearing. Stereo mix not bad.

Rubber Soul - music in left channel along with backing vocals, lead vocals in right channel. More detail, but same stereo mix as 87 release (according to booklet).

Revolver - Sounds great, but I am used to my parents' mono vinyl recording as it is my favorite of all Beatles releases. The instruments sound fantastic though & I'll have to listen some more to see if I can get past my bias...

I'd guess that they would ship tomorrow, just to assure the street date wouldn't get breached.

Looks like some have had their Box Set orders on Amazon billed, shipped and even delivered today, from looking at some online discussions. A local record store has an in-store sale tomorrow only, tempting. Mono set for $239 (limited quantity, which means of course they'll be gone instantly).

Is that link to Hoffman???
It's not working for me, nor is my bookmark, and I'm pretty sure there's a thread here about site issues there.

OK, found it and this last post probably nails it...

"Yeah I still can't get in over at the SH Forums...this has to be Beatles remasters-related, I think they're probably setting records for the number of people all trying to log in and post at once...you can almost hear the server groaning from here!"
