Bell amplifier

Great styling!

I have not owned that model but I have had a mono version with the same styling and an earlier (2122B) mono amp. You may notice that the cover does not have any openings for ventilaiton. These amplifiers get hot! The layout on the insides is crouded witch makes replacing the capacitors more difficult than with many other amplifiers of that era. The phono section gain is lower than normal but will still work with most moving maginate cartridges.

I wish I knew...it's a rather neat lookin' amp.

My dad bought a pair of Bell bookshelf loudspeakers back in the early '60s while stationed in Chartres, France (before being shipped off for Nam). I believe they have a 2" cone tweeter and an 8" woofer in a ported enclosure...they're kinda crude sounding, thin, and lacking body, which is unfortunant seeing that they're built as solid as a rock, and the cane grill is sharp as hell! That doesn't mean that the integrated amp is lifeless, though. His Bell speakers were driven by a 45 watt Kenwood receiver of the same vintage, and when my mom used the Bells, they were driven by a cheap 15 watt RadioShack receiver. Who knows...those Bells may sound sweet under tube amplification!

We'll have to dig 'em out someday and try 'em out with my bro's Magnavox EL84-based SE console amp...don't know if 4 or 5 watts total will be enough for the Bells (we don't know their specs), but it's worth a try...

Bell sound quality

Sound quality is good, or just acceptable?

I would definitely say it would be worth listening to. I used my Bell amplifier with a tuner in my kitchen system for about a year. The sound quality of my unit was good but would not challenge the state of the art units of the time.

My uncle was a big wig accountant for Thompson Products in St. Catharines Ontario and he has a few Bell tubed pieces including a reel to reel. I keep trying to inherit them before he passes but to no avail. One day I will have them. Not that I wish for something bad to happen . I love my uncle and in fact dissected a German 1950's tubed console at his house this morning.

Bell Labs made good stuff and what you have there is an off shoot of Bell and Howell. One of the 1st in the industry Bell (as in telephone) made recording studios for motion picture studios, I think somewhere in there is the start up of Western Electric, which goes to Altec, which brings in Lancing who started JBL.......... basically Bell Labs was good quality non pro audio with ties to pro audio of the highest quality.
Made in I think Redwood, Ca. I was looking at something just the other day.

Yes, I think that amp would get quite hot even if biased correctly, but the 6CA4 is a good rectifier, I like 6V6 power tubes and the only drivers I could see the numbers for were 12AX7s which are good minis. If you buy it, run it with the cabinet removed.

i would have to say that the sound quality would be very good for that amp.although i dont have the 3030 i have the mono version the 2315 and have no complaints whatsoever with it.for a 6v6 based amp it sure is punchy in the lower frequency range. a unique fetature of this amp is the variable loudness control and if used properly works quite well as compared to just a loudness switched found on many integrateds and preamps.for $150 the price seems fair since its tested and gone through.ive seen clean 2315's go for $100 so $150 is not to far off for the stereo version.
