BEST Female vocalists of all times

Okay, I did say best. No criteria, no genre limitations. But for this thread I'll keep it to demonstrated vocal qualities not stage presence or non-vocal performing ability. Also, I'd like to encourage folks to offer substantive criticism of an artist as well as support/examples. Hopefully we'll all get exposed to some great singers and here some interesting takes.

Please, no lists. One singer at a time, provide an example, make an argument if you choose, or let her sing for herself. If you disagree, say so. Think of it like voting for the hall of fame.

As the OP. I'll compile a list from time to time of those still in the running. Sounds like fun huh?

Judy Garland.
Julie London.
Courtney Love.
Bessie Smith.
Margaret Morgan (vocalist for These Trails, band very few folks know)

Others will weigh in and I'm sure Janis Joplin will pop up several times, but'cha ask Janis and she'd have sho nuff answered Bessie Smith.

I find Julie London's voice thin and lacking any interest. She often sings under volume in the same range, yes it's the style, but I also think it's due to her limitations.

Judy Garland is in that group that I consider show tune singers, Shirley Bassy, Ethel Merman, that Kazan woman, you know the type, there's a lot of them. Its hard for me to separate their singing from performance. It's distracting either way.

Annie Haslam. Unknown by many and underappreciated. Any singer who is one of a select group who can use a five octave vocal range has my vote. I think she just hooked up with the wrong band (s). Not that the band was bad but they did not take advantage of her range. Try Renaissance "the sounds of the sea". Just the first song that comes to mind.

Whitney got to be given a high standing too....there have been some truly amazing women come along over the years.

2 things about WH, she has to have the worst library of material ever assembled; she indeed has a fine singing voice, but there are countless cruise ships on the sea right now with singers with fine voices. I don't get anything interesting from her, and she often over sings.
