BK vs Hafler

HI all, I'm considering Bi-amping I currently own a Hafler DH200 that my father in law built for me new which is fantistic, I have a chance to pick up a pair of BK ST140 amps or the option to purchase just one. Is it better to stay with the same amps for Bi-Amping ? I might have to sell the Hafler to fund both BK's which I might regret the Hafler is very special to me. Any thought's ? Thanks

I have a B&K ST-140 amp that I bought new in 1988.
I know people that bi-amp with different amps, shouldn't be a problem.
People say the B&K ST-140 amp is very "tube like."
That is true....but it has the down-side of a tube amp also.
While the midrange is great, the high end is slightly rolled off (still good though), while the bass (the amps biggest weakness) is a bit loose.
If it was me, I'd use the Hafler DH200 on the woofers, and the B&K ST-140 on the midrange/tweeters.
Good luck!!
Steve

Well with that said I tkink thats the way to go that way I have the best of both amps without missing my Hafler down the road. Thanks

The B&K ST-140 is a great amp, as is the Hafler DH-200.

Only problem you may have is input sensitivity may be different between the Hafler and the B&K, and one may play louder than the other. If I were you and could spring for both ST-140's, I would. That way there is no question about input sensitivity.......and you get a bonus.....use your DH200 on that "other" system you know you want to put together! :D

I had both these amps in years past, and great luck with them. Brings back some good memories!

Best,

Paul :thmbsp:

I really don't want to sell the Hafler but I have a Yammie CT1010 tuner sitting around which I don't use .Mabey I'll just let that go. Thanks

B&K vs Hafler

I have a ST-140 that I've updated & repaired over a few years of use-I've been tempted to get another & convert to monoblocs - powering my Maggie SMGa's. I changed the PS caps to 27K uf & have a HexFred bridge in place of the original rectifier. The output mosfets have been changed to Exicons -I think the bass is pretty tight!
