Blaupunkt Milano

Greetings my name is Bob and I’m new on AudioKarma. A while back I was given a Blaupunkt Milano 3D Stereo all tube tabletop radio (http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/blaupunkt_milano_2225expor.html) from 1955 or 56. Everything works and it sounds fantastic. It has AM, FM and Shortwave. It has plugins on the back for phono and tape, but the connections are something I’ve never seen before. I was wondering how I could adapt it to a RCA plugs to hook up a turntable (with phono preamp), CD player and MP3 player (one at a time). I doubt I’d be able to find an adapter for it so I was wondering if I could splice in an RCA input cable and run it out the back. I was thinking it would be better to splice into the tape in so there won’t be confusion with any RIAA EQ etc. Does anybody have one of these or know much about them? Does anybody see any problem with this?

You can find DIN to RCA adapters if you don't want to modify the radio. My Grundig console uses 3 pin DIN inputs so I modified a DIN cable with RCA plugs on one end for phono input. You can find ready made DIN to RCA adapters in virtually any pin combination.

I doubt you have any RIAA EQ on the table radio phono input, it was most likely set up to use a high output ceramic cartridge so you could plug your phono preamp output into either the phono input or tape input. On my Grundig both of those inputs do exactly the same thing. You could check a the schematic to be sure.

I just did something similar to my Nordmende Menuett Stereo:

I soldered three wires directly under the chassis on the tape in pins (ground, left, right) and phono in (ceramic). Wires are then going to a scavenged RCA double jack.

This way, I can plug two devices controlled by the "Phono" switch in front.

Did the same for the speakers aux jacks...

Could adapt something for additional speaker jacks (two more if needed) and link the "tape out" to another RCA connector (to go out and record on the computer if needed).

Sorry, no pictures... The thing stayed in my cottage 100 kms away and is waiting for additional work (distorts a little, see my other threads).

You can find DIN to RCA adapters if you don't want to modify the radio.

I would prefer not to modify the radio, but I don't think the inputs are DIN. I could post a picture. What's the best way to post a picture on the thread? Can you upload onto this forum or do you have to link to something like photobucket?

The easiest way is to use the img link from photobucket. The circular 3 or 5 pin DIN jacks were fairly standard on German radios from the mid 50's. They pretty much standardized everything (even between brands) but it's possible that yours is different.

You probably need something like this:

DIN is the engineering standarization group in Germany, basically the equivalent to ASME in the USA. Hopefully one day DIN and ASME will put their heads together and become DIN-ASME, and standarize between them. Basically DIN is metric, and ASME is imperial.

Thinking about it a bit, since it's a mid 50's mono you might just need a 2 pin DIN to RCA adapter like this:

Here's a couple of pictures. As you can see from the shot of the back panel, it doesn't look like a DIN. It's like nothing I've seen before.

Yep, not DIN. Those look like the connectors my Grundig uses for the AM and FM antenna. You should be able to use a standard banana plug to connect your preamp, I used some basic Radio Shack banana plugs to hook an external antenna to my older Grundig.

You could ask over at antiqueradios.com. They might even know what the appropriate connector is called.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

I created a cable by connecting banana plugs to an RCA cable. It works but doesn’t sound too good when I hook up my MP3 player. I wonder if it’s the RIAA EQ or something else. According to Wikipedia, it was standardized by 1954 and this unit was from 1955 or 1956. I don’t know if and when it became the standard in Europe though – maybe not until 1958.
