A few weeks ago I started smelling gas around the left rear tire. Look underneath and couldn't see any gas dripping. Checked on the 'net and couldn't find anything on point. Then it started getting worse and I found some videos about the fuel filter underneath the rear seat. Pulled the seat out, took a metal cover off and there it was.
I thought it was just a bad gasket but I started the engine and could see gas seeping up through cracks in the top of the fuel filter. Since this car is about 18 years old I decided to get both the filter and fuel pump which is on the passenger side under the back seat.
I had some trouble getting the metal ring off the top as the whole housing on the pump and filter was turning the flange broke on both the pump and filter. It took me quite a while to figure out that I had to hold a tab down on the split ring in a recess in the tank and then I could get the metal ring off. Quite the learning experience.
Make sure you tie a wire to the connections from the pump at the filter when you pull the old pump out as it will be a bitch otherwise to pull all of that over to the left side of the tank.
That CTA tool worked well. I watched several videos of guys beating and banging the ring with a hammer and a chisel but that's silly and tough to do. Get a suitable tool. New parts are Bosch. Edit: The tank adapter rings and gaskets are BMW parts.
Done, no leaks, engine runs.
