Bogen SRB 20 are the parts worth a build?

Hi All,

So I picked up a Bogen SRB 20 since it was cheap and now I'm not sure what to do with it :p It doesn't have a line level input just phono inputs. So I'm wondering if I should just harvest parts and build an amp out of them? are the parts worth harvesting? It uses a strange output tube I've never seen before, a ECL 82, and looking at the diagrams I've seen of them it looks like half of the tube is a pentode and the other half is a triode? Thoughts?

The SRB-20 does have Aux inputs as well as the Mag Phono.

It is a very nice sounding receiver with the 6BM8/ECL82 tubes.

on the selector it says Xtal phono aux, I thought Xtal phono wouldn't be the same as a line level?

Crystal phono inputs are essentially line level. Usually they are higher impedance but line level devices feed into them fine.

Hmmm...... I don't know what I should do with it then, I don't really need the radio part of it or the phono part. The output transformers look really small compared to the heathkit's, which I haven't even started restoring :P I still need to buy some parts for it :P

I've only seen one Bogen receiver before, but the transformers did look small on that one. I hear good things about them though, and at the time that thing was made, Bogen was making top shelf PA gear. They certainly knew how to build tube gear, so I wouldn't be too surprised if it sounds better than it looks like it should.

That model is a Bogen/Presto which, differs than Bogen in terms of design scheme. Typically, the size of the output transformer does not play a factor on the frequency response of Bogen Valve Receivers. However, things may have changed when Bogen/Presto were merged to one company.

I have measured the frequency response of my old (David) Bogen Receiver and the frequency response was relatively flat from 10 Hz - 50,000 kHz in addition to their semiconductor products that exceed the above figures. However, I do not have any on hands experience with Bogen/Presto products.

You may want to just measure the output transformer's frequency response to see where it stands.

Best Regards,

Why not just get it working enough to where you can take a listen to it and make a decision from there?

This is a nice looking and sounding receiver and someone should enjoy it.
