I got a pair of 301 II couple of years back out of the trash, both speakers had corners by the tweets broke I figured maybe for the garage :) . But I already had set of DCM 17 that sounded great . I decided to put these in a Lab at work to have background music mating them to a Realistic STA 95 I also rescued from the trash :)

The left speaker has a broken component in the crossover that I do not know what it is . Link to picture on flickr can some one advise me or better yet anyone have better crossover design ( what you see in image is the whole crossover ) I can put a couple of buck in and have fun :) first image has part circled in red

if you are just using them for background music and promise to watch the volume then it can be by-passed, so can the bulb for that matter, they are there to help protect the tweeter, i have used a number of the "targeting tweeters" with cap only with good results. im sure some other bose users will chime in so wait till you hear from a few.

still looking for some advice

looks like wire wound resistor has what appears to be heat shield behind it ?

Bose 301 III used Resistor-WW,10%,5W,7.5W PN 125605-7R5

what would be suitable replacement I will do both side and replace caps

thanks Kent

Who says Bose hase No Lows

Look like this Bose thread keeps getting buried, how low can you get :)

I am willing to put these at work cause I am not a fan and have a few much better ... , but read they are good for background music :)

I am sure these are much better then the Dell PC speakers that are making my ears bleed ... please help stop the torture ...:tears:

Born2tech is correct. The 2 devices in line with the tweeter are there to protect it from overdriving. It is a common method and was used in very large studio monitors like the UREI 813s of the same vintage.

He is correct in that you can bypass them with the understanding that the protection from someone turning up the volume can possibly damage the tweeters. I also suspect that the crossover cap is also just fine and does not need replacement.

How are the foam surrounds on the woofers?

Cheers,

David

Another way is to replace the bulb with a fuse and fuse holder. Easier to replace if you get too roudy with the volume.:D Bose will even sell you them for more that what you will pay at Radio Shack. I replaced the bulbs in my series III's with fuses. I placed them under the grill next to a tweeter, easier to change than pulling the woofer.

the bulb is fine there is an 7.5 ohm wire resistor in front of it ... with a heat shield ... no problem as long as it is ran on low power ?... yeah like I trust common area / lab some buffoon wont crank it ..... only plan on a STA 95 unit maybe that will be protection ...

Common sense tell me this is wrong I need 7.5 - 8 ohms ahead of the lamp fuse which increases resistance with power ... I figured same thing must happen with wire wound as it also has a heat shield ... I am thinking Bose would not do this is not needed if they could save 2 cents or so for the heat shield .... so maybe flame resistant 5w 8 ohm resistor ?

surrounds are in great shape .. just right side. wire wound resistor is actually broke / open ..
