Bose 601 series i

Picked up some Bose 601's a few weeks ago and I'm just getting around to working on them. I like my 301 series 2 speakers but saw these for cheap locally and snagged them. The seller said only 1 of the pair was working. On inspection I found that the malfunctioning speaker had a broken resistor lead. I replaced the resistors in both speakers and they're working! The PO replaced the woofers with Memphis Car Audio 5-MS84D which are dual 4 ohm woofers. I bet they went that route instead of replacing the foam surrounds. The crossovers appear to be untouched.

Would these be considered an upgrade over the original woofers? These speakers ROCK at higher volume but don't really come into play at lower volumes. I was thinking I would add these to my 301's using my Sony STR-7065 and really fill our large family room with sound. I've cleaned the wood up and plan on replacing the tweed like fabric. Or maybe try to copy the dual beige and black of my 301's.

I would keep an eye out on the auction site for replacement woofers. As stated, those appeared to just be popped in as a last resort.
 
I completely agree with @onwardjames ! That site will have them. I had to get a couple for mine when I got them. Enjoy. They are considered by many to be the best Bose made. I've had 2 versions of 901s, and I thought the version 3 sounded nicer with the MAC1900 I was driving them with at the time. My version 2s were on a Bose 1801 power amp. I didn't have the best location for them.

I had the 8.2s and the 601s beat them hands down. In fact, the guy who first tried out my 8.2s (when I was selling them after moving in different directions), thought his 601s were better. I remember auditioning the 10.2s and they sounded nice. Much more full than the 8.2s, which scared the crap out of my son when we were watching Jurassic Park on my new HTR. I was using the 8.2s as Front R and L with a custom made speaker setup in a TV console for the centre channel! It was an experiment in my early days in electronics, that worked surprisingly well, and lasted through-out its life span. I think I was using similar to the Minimus 7s for surround speakers. It was stunning until your brain got used to it, and then eventually you could sense the tricks they were doing to get better sound out of cheaper gear. That's OK, I get the same sound with just two speakers!
