Boston A100's... Which amp to match?

I'm putting together a basic system for my brother and have already acquired a set of Boston A100 speakers. What will be good receiver or integrated amp to pair with them?

I bought a Marantz 2225 around the same time but I found the combination a little boomy and "scooped"-sounding with the controls flat, so I might be looking for something with stronger mids. Any suggestions?

Once owned a pair of A100 but never experienced that characteristic. :scratch2:

Do you have them placed in the corners of the room by any chance?

They were about 3 ft from the wall and 5 ft from the corners when I listened to them last. It's been a couple weeks since I've had them out, but I remember they didn't sound that great together.

Back in the day, sold a lot of A-100/Yamaha combos. If you like receivers, CR 600/620 or 800/820's might be a good choice.

Did you have the loudness button on when you played the Marantz? If so, maybe try it without it.

Never experienced that either, I had a pair I passed along to a friend in need after I had reformed them Never boomy here either. I only ever listened to them on an old Sherwood S-8900 which sounded good together.

It may need to have the capacitors replaced. Typically the caps lose their value which has the effect of raising the crossover frequency (2000hz for the A100) which could cause a loss of midrange and produce your 'scooped' effect. A quick search indicates it uses a 4.7 and 20 microfarad caps.

I usually don't use the 'loudness' setting.

I have a yamaha CA-410 that I could probably try tomorrow. I might check out the crossover caps too but I didn't think they were that old.
