Bourbon for Cooking

IPADave

Turning a whiter shade of pale.
I found a bourbon steak marinade that I'd like to try. They recommend a Bourbon that you'd drink. Neither me or my GF are Bourbon drinkers. I'm looking for a good Bourbon that's highly drinkable but won't break the bank, less than $40 for 750 ml. What do you think of Knob Creek? Other recommendations?

Jack black is not bourbon. There are all sorts of things one could call it “bourbon” is not on the list.

Knob Creek is a very nice bourbon but maybe too nice to cook with.

While one should never cook with something they would not drink, you need not go overboard.

Save the cash and try Jim Beam.

...unless you want to try sipping a nicer bourbon leftover from the recipe.

It looks like Jim Beam is just about half the price of Knob Creek at the New Hampshire State Liquor store.

I bought a bottle of Makers Mark. I checked some bourbon reviews on the web and Makers Mark seemed like a good gateway bourbon. I talked to "my guy" at the NH State Liquor store and he said that Makers Mark was their best selling bourbon so I thought what hell. The price wasn't bad for a 375 ml bottle. I'm going to try some later, on the rocks. We'll see.

Evan Williams 1783 is solid for what it is. Good for mixers, tolerable on the rocks, runs about $25 for a full handle around here. (1.75L)

I tend to keep a bottle in the freezer so I don't end up feeling guilty mixing Coke with the "good stuff."

Once the "good stuff" runs out, I often don't bother replacing it until the 1783 is gone too.
