Hi folks,

I have a new to me pair of these speakers and before purchasing them I read up on the Tobin mod threads. The late owner was an electronics guy, so I was hoping he had already done the mod. I popped them open and here is what the crossovers look like:

Those two components zip-tied to the enclosure are what he has added.

Would it be easier to redo everything to Tobin's spec, or to figure out what is going on here and roll with it?

Initial sound impressions are good, but there is a lot of buzz on higher frequencies (no flower pot mod).

It's possible, but it's not possible to tell absolutely, without seeing what's inside the metal can. There's lots of other caps and resistors in there...

That said- I'm guessing that it's probably not Tobin-modded- as those wire and jumper connections on the outside of the can, look like original. IME- at least when I've done the Tobin mod on one of those crossovers, inside the original metal can- you have to change the external connection arrangement on that can (different jumpers and different places for wire connections), to get the Tobin circuit layout to work, with the new components inside of that can.

Gordon.

The caps suggest to me that he lowered the mid range to woofer crossover frequency to the more desirable 400 hz. Remove the tweeters from in front of the woofer and build a small box and place them on top f the speaker in vertical alignment with the midrange speaker.

That would be my guess, too. Especially if the woofer is also connected to the tap on the low-pass coil, for the lower frequency.
