Bozak Concert Grands cabinet details, etc.

Hi friends,

I was doing well reducing the size of my modest speaker collection but that seemed to change recently. It is probable that I will be in receipt of Bozak Concert Grand guts...the cabs no longer really exist. Each speaker will contain 4 12" woofers, 2 midranges and 8 tweeters. I also think there is a total of four large black crossovers. Can someone point me in the direction of cabinet details?

I may have a relative who can construct 5-cubic-ft cabinets but I am a little overwhelmed by the pictures online. I am no purist but I would like to recreate a nice replica of what Rudy would have constructed but using plywood to lighten the weight as well as affix coasters. WAF is not a limiting issue as she/me would not allow these elephants in the living room. But I do have a place of pride in a clean garage where I do a lot of work.

Thanks for any advice. Yes, I tried Yahoo Group but it's been a long while for acceptance as I have Bozak Tempos, too...no reply or acceptance. Figured some of you must own these. -Joseph

Plywood would need to be very thick and need a lot of bracing. When designing make sure the interior volume is not less than 20 cubic feet in volume after accounting for bracing, crossovers, etc. Rudy always said the min was 5 but every cabinet yielded slightly less. This was never corrected until NEAR started production after buying out Bozak.

Thanks a lot, Brian! That helps. Do you own any at the moment or do you know if the drivers were mounted from the back like my 301s?

My audio bud has the plans showing the dimensions from the kit build they sold back in the day. Unfortunately I don't have a scanner. I see you live relatively nearby so if you'd like sometime we could get together and you could copy the plans. If the plans aren't enough I also happen to have a pair of cg's kicking around that you could measure out. These monsters are BIG. I know I wouldn't attempt a scratch build.

Rudy's drivers were all designed to be mounted on the baffle backside. On the consumer line all were mounted from the backside. I am not on top of the commercial offerings as much. All of them I have seen were back mounted but will not guarentee all were.

PM'ing you motorstereo.

I haven't decided if I want to replicate the original cabinets precisely or vary it by making them a little thinner, taller and on coasters with side handles. They will be going in my garage where I do a lot of work…don't worry, it's a place of honor. These bad boys cannot go in my living room/piano room…just too damn big.

BTW, I just heard back from the Yahoo Bozak Group librarian. Hopefully I'll be able to join soon. I never use Yahoo (anymore) and boy do you get a lot of ads and junk when you try to use Groups.

Follow-up:

Yahoo Bozak group seems very difficult to join because after a certain number of days your request gets returned to you...oh well.

Looking for opinions on acoustics (I'm an amateur) regarding Bozak speaker construction. I have all the details regarding Concert Grand measurements but am considering doing a little custom since these will never be fully authentic. 1.) I am going to keep the outside appearance true to numbers, 2.) However, I am going to extend the depth to a full two feet instead of 18", and 3.) I want to add a third midrange in mirror fashion with the tweeters row going down the middle. (I happen to own six midranges.) So, on one speaker two midranges on the outer right side and on the other speaker two midranges on the outer left side, probably in a diagonal so they can fit.

Question: Are there any acoustic problems with what I am proposing?

Attached are two pics (not mine) just for reference. -Joseph

Adding the midrange will create a change in impedance - this may also require changing the crossover.

Thanks, tensleep. I don't have the skill to figure out the change to the crossover I would need to make so will stay with the original two midrange scheme. I will do Pat Tobin's 104T crossover plan in a couple weeks.

I would keep those 2 midranges as spares; just in case. My cg's aren't lacking in midrange at all and I wouldn't consider adding another mid. With the vertical tweeter array you're not going to get much high end while walking around. Mine are vertical and when I sit down in a chair it's almost like someone is flipping a high filter switch off. I had thought of adding a super tweeter at some point but never got around to it.
That's probably not a bad idea about going deeper with your cabs. Adding extra bracing would also be a good idea.
That's nice of the bozak group to deny your request. Don't feel bad my request for whatever reason was denied also. Good luck with your build

Thanks for the advice, motorstereo! Hey, my drivers came with four of the 10102 crossovers...just want to confirm these go in the CGs after doing Tobin 104T mods to them, right? (Front pair has identical lettering)

Maybe I'll put the other two in my customized Tempos...kind of a mini-302.
