Brian Cheney of VMPS - RIP

To all,

I just read on the VMPS Forum, at AudioCircle.com, that Brian Cheney, founder and chief designer of VMPS speakers, has passed away. Brian had been I'll, and in the hospital, but Brian never recovered.

So sad, I for one will miss him very much!

Yea, it pretty much Sucks! I know Brian has had health issues, over the last few years. But, he was always able to bounce back. Not this time.

I'm at least glad that I had the chance to meet Brian, and Shirley, and John Cassler too. And hear Brian's speakers! I just wished that I could afford a pair. Now, that probably will never happen. Though, I know that's trivial, in light of this news.

Also, since Brian was basically a one-man-show, at VMPS, I suppose VMPS will close too. Which only compounds this tragedy... :no:
 
Yeah, he's kind of always been around. I spent a few high school years in El Sobrante and there's always been kind of this freindly collaberation between a couple of speaker guys around here. Brian, Brian Elliott, Seigfried Linkwitz, Pro-Media, Mike Klasko. Maybe Ken Kantor too?

I just got an email about this sad news. Like many, I was a fan of his designs and of the man himself. A true original and an iconoclast, he made great stuff and his "one man show" survived a fickle industry far longer than would have been possible with a less stalwart guy at the helm, particularly given his non-traditional designs. Hats off to Brian Cheney.
 
I know, Brian was a fixture in the speaker world. Seems like he was always around. I even bought "Audio Magazine", in the 70's and 80's, just to see Brian's crazy classified adds! Ungodly speaker designs, depicted via pencil drawings?!? I thought the guy must be nuts. But, after Tony Cordesman gave glowing reviews to many of Brian's speakers, I guess I started taking VMPS seriously. I've was a fan for life since then. And I hope the company finds a way to survive...???

I feel very sad to read of Brian's passing. I know the vmpsaudio website has been dysfunctional for some time, but vmpseurope has been okay. That's where I read Brian had died and his company will close. I worked at a high school for 30 years and talked the librarian into subscribing to Audio (remember the Oct. equipment review issues that were as thick as a phone book? Or "Lirpa Labs" reviews in the April issues?). Like StimpyWan (above post), I was transfixed by the Veritone speaker ads. I figured eventually I'd have to buy a pair and when I noticed the 20th Anniversary TowerII had disappeared from the vmps website, I quickly called Brian. He told me he had one pair left in piano black, and I ordered them immediately. So I guess I have the last pair. I've had them for about eight years and they sound absolutely fantastic. I'm going to miss reading about all the new designs that sprouted up regularly on vmpsaudio.com. My thoughts go out to Brian and his friends and family.
 
I spoke with Brian over the phone in early July when it appeared (at that time) that I was going to purchase an old friend's pair of VMPS Super Tower II/AR's.
My friend reconsidered and I ended up not getting the speakers.
Just as well as I now have a perfect pair of JBL 250ti's that are much better speakers than those Super Towers.

Brian was very helpful and even remembered working with my friend when the speakers were built back in the late 80's.

Rest in peace Brian.
