Bummed Out About Schiit

musichal

poet emeritus
Beside my chair is a small stack of two tiny components - A Schiit Modi 2U and Magi 2U, IIRC. My headphone system. I have Hifiman HE-400i, some Sennheiser Massdrop model with the moniker "Jubilee", AKG240S and the Monoprice Retro closed-back.

Acquired the latter one recently, and wanted to listen to some music when I awoke at 0300. Now it is after 0700 and I still haven't been able to coax my PC into recognizing the Modi 2 device. Did more than I understand trying to download drivers from the Schiit site, and trying to wade my way through the Device Manager and other PC areas, trying to follow advice I found online from those having the same problems.

I hate computers. Love to use them. Hate when they use me up, and with all I've had going on the last few days - life-and-death stuff - my patience for trying to solve this is also now pretty used up, after four hours in over my head. One user who knew his way around a computer pretty well - way beyond what I understand - said he gave up and simply bought a cheaper USB DAC that works fine, he says.

I'd much rather use the Schiit. Bummed out, yeah. I think maybe a bit more than I should be - am I using a relatively minor complaint as a scapegoat for the real issues going on here? Possibly that hit the nail on the head. Silly human.

I had a problem with my old PC not recognizing my original Schiit Modi once after several years of use. Figured the unit died on me and ordered a brand new Sanskrit SMSL 6th DAC .. hooked it up and PC failed to recognize that as well. o_O

Long story short .. through trial & error .. USB port went bad on my old PC.

Does Schiit have a customer service number? If so, they may be able to guide you through the process to get it working again.

Bingo! Apparently.

Looked on the sides of my laptop and found another USB port on the other end of the PC. Switched my cord to it, and now I have sound. Thanks loads for the tip - don't know why it didn't occur to me to try a different port. Just being stupid, stubborn, and wanting to feel pissed off anyway, I guess. Ah, soothing... James/Sanborn Double Vision is chillin' me out as I write, Where were you four hours ago?

Sounds silly but have you tried a restart.

Not a re boot but a complete shut down and re start ?

Many times when a USB port locks out it's a software issue, not a hardware(bad port). A reboot will not cause the OS to reconnect the port only a restart.

The problems I have had with dacs have turned out to be USB cables and ports, but it wasn't apparent at the time for me. And it's never consistent it seems. One cable works fine with the FiiO, but not the schiit which would cause me to think drivers. Then (hours later) I switch cords, or ports and off it goes! Seems like with laptops especially the ports take a beating, and 2 of the three on my Toshiba don't work with the schiit but will with the FiiO leaving me swapping a pile of cables around finding a combination that works when all I wanted was to play some freaking music!

I finally started using the USB port on a docking station with the laptop and haven't had much problem since. This is one area where having a turntable and shelves of lp's had an advantage..always worked (well usually)..

Multiple restarts did not help.

However... now that the laptop finally recognized the Schiit Modi-2u, I unplugged from the newly-used port back to the former, and it now works. A few times recently, I've had to unplug abd replug from the port to get the Device Manager to find the Modi. Maybe some settings I don't understand need resetting? But as long as it keeps working, I won't futz with it.

One more thing worth mentioning, as it relates to restarts: A lot of people may not realize that their power button doesn't actually shut down the computer, unless they specifically tell it to. Most computers default to "sleep" rather than a bona-fide shut down, with a subsequent restart. It's a somewhat buried setting: Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings > Choose what the power buttons do.

Here's my screenshot after I set them properly:

Could be the USB cable, too.

PS Bonus 21st Century 'pute tip: If the 'pute's a WinTel machine (i.e., Windows OS & Intel processor) -- rolling back to a system restore point before the last OS update pushed out by the nice folks @ Microsoft* is, I'd opine, always a good thing to try whenever something suddenly stops working. :)

___________
* Bless their hearts.

Typically holding the power button down for 5 seconds will cause a shutdown regardless of the "power button" settings.

The confusion is the difference between a restart / reboot and a shut down.

A restart/reboot may not reset many settings such as a hung USB port or other item as it reloads the latest settings(pre-restart/reboot) from those devices when it restarts.

A shut down will clear and reset those settings to their default and often clear up issues such as the one in the OP.

LINUX

A few yrs back I had a heck of a time with a Windows Laptop/drivers and an Audio-gd device

I took a 4 year old laptop and installed Linux... laptop recognized the device on 1st boot-up after clean install

I've been using a Linux box to playback my music ever since

Perhaps your PC has older USB or both USB and the newer faster USB. My gaming rig has both. My gaming headphones with mic will only work with the USB2 port for some reason. They don't like the std. USB port. :dunno:

the USB 3 ports are (or at least, early on, were) labeled with a small, barely visible "SS" symbol. They often had a different color center piece ( blue, in the case of Dell laptops, at least) to visually distinguish them from USB 2 ports.

They are blue on mine as well.

Sometimes uninstalling your USB ports and restarting your computer does the trick. Windows can get confused sometimes when plugging in and then unplugging some devices and quits recognizing those devices. When you reboot after uninstalling the USB ports Windows recognizes the USB ports as "new" and reinstalls the drivers for them. They will then work properly again.

Un-installing ports isn't in my wheelhouse.
