A very sad day here in So Fla. Had to put my beautiful kitty, Bebe, to sleep. Stomach cancer, the vet said. I suspected something bad. She'd been throwing up almost daily for about a month and had lost a lot of weight. An ultrasound revealed a mass in the esophagus and small tumors in the stomach lining. The mass was blocking most solid food from passing. Surgery really wasn't an option and would only prolong the inevitable; there just wasn't much anyone could do.
The vet asked if I wanted to spend one more day with her, and I thought about it, but I just didn't want to see her struggle any more. Enough.
I had about ten minutes of quiet time with her. Held her in my arms, stroked her softly, told her how much I loved her and would miss her, and that she was the best friend anyone could ever have. It was truly a privilege looking after Bebe for 11 years. Hard to believe it was that long ago that she just showed up on my doorstep asking for a place to stay.
Instead of cremating, I decided to bring the body home so her playmate, Cinder, would have a chance to say goodbye. They always got along well, and I could tell he knew something was wrong. Last night, for instance, he gave up his place on the bed, and lately I noticed him letting her eat first, which is pretty unusual for an alpha male. It's neat how animals look after each other.
Anyway, thanks for letting me share. For those of us who don't have children, pets are our families. Bebe was my special angel.
