Butchered MC60

I have a pair of MC60 that the previous owner butchered. The only things salvageable are the power transformers, output transformers, chokes, and Mac badges.

What should I do?

I can have custom chassis made but, should I keep them as mono blocks or make one big stereo amp?

The output stage will remain original but, should I modify the driver stage? Has anyone modded the front end of a MC60?

fwiw If it were me I'd keep them as monos.One reason would be the weight. He must of really did some damage if you can't salvage the sheetmetal and front end. You wouldn't have a picture of this carnage would you?
 
If the chassis can be used and the terminal board is still in place they can be salvaged, didn't say it would be cheap, but if the iron is good they can be made to sing again. I haven't found any mods that were worth messing with, updates with a good grade of capacitor (not botique) is all a 60 ever needs, and at that only a few of the capacitors in a 60 are critical - the rest can remain original bumblebees, rtaylor can testify to that - his 60's sound nice......

To bad he only has one. I figure it will end up going for a pretty penny.

I think I am going to have new chassis made out of aluminum. This way I can mirror image the pair.

good idea,
i have a friend that builds his own amps and does mirrored images of them.i think it looks cool.good luck with the project.

Those chassis can be fixed as they are. Just use new style heat pipe style ceramic sockets for the output tubes. These are used on the new MKIV MC275 and are board mount but can be used as a chassis mount socket also.


Whoops, the can mounts are chewed up so just buy a new mount and rotate 90 degrees..

A good tig welder could fix up those tops. You'd need to get them rechromed tho. If there is any lettering it would be lost also. The aluminum cases sound good too.

I don't think I quite get it. I went and looked at mine and the
only thing I see out of place with yours is the mounting for the one cap can, shouldn't be hard to make one fit. :dunno:

I agree, looks like one cap mountng hole is chewed up, use a pair of the twist loc mounting plates, one on top and one on bottom and they will probably hide the opened up hole. The chrome looks salveagable with some car polish, just don't polish off the lettering.
