Can a 100kΩ balance pot replace a 250kΩ unit?

Blue Shadow

Waiting for Vintage Gear from this century
I want to replace the balance pot in a preamp. The original is 250kΩ and a good one of these is hard to find. There are a few 100kΩ units that could work, but will they?

Here is the schematic of that section of the unit. The Balance control is the RV1a and b in the center of the diagram. Wondering what effects the lower resistance will have on the circuit and if modifications (added resistance) would be necessary. Guidance greatly appreciated.

If you're willing to sacrifice the ability to turn one channel all the way to "off", just add a 150K from the ground connection on the pot. This will keep the input impedance the same with the balance control in the center position.

The above is only correct if the new balance control has two sections, one for each channel. With a 100k control, the parallel Resistance of the balance and volume is almost half (approx. 83K vs. 166K). If it's not too much of a pain, try it.
