Can we talk speakers?

^ I did overlook those. The PM-C series is so rare and seldom seen that I didn't even think of them when posted that. Certainly harder to find than even the AS and LM models. I've never had an chance to listen to any of the PM-C line, nor the XL models that look similar and are from roughly the same time frame. Would like an opoortunity to check them both out, but it hasn't come along yet.

Only issue I had was with the planer tweeter, it played all the notes fine but was very directional so I replaced them with a dome which opened them right up. crossover is at 8k so picking something to work is not hard. I used some new polk domes because honestly I have never heard anyone complain about them.

Second is they are not veneered but at 400 a piece veneer would have most likely put them way out of the price range of competition at the time.

The poly, mica, carbon cones on the mid and woofer are amazing and must have been expensive as no one has made them since. They were designed for low distortion so the woofer can run up to 2k crossover to the mid which with a large driver doing some mid duties makes guitars and such sound just like they are playing right in your room with an amp and speaker stack which is sweet and makes them very lively I guess is the word.

The woofer running higher really sets these apart, put up against a similar ADS, yes the ADS is there and sounds good but switch to one of these as configured and the sound is like 10 feet all around the speaker which makes everything sound live in your room which I love and you don't have to worry to much about a sweet spot its everywhere.

In room bass response is down 2db at 25 then noticeably drops off which is fine with me,. (they are not in corners)

the 260 watt rating puts them way above most of its comparable competition of the time.

The woofer gobbles up power without even breaking a sweat and has a lot of travel and doesn't even need to use a lot of it.

Woofer cone and all drivers have cloth surrounds (except the polk tweets of course).

Nice. I did some looking online earlier and found some info on them. As you stated, the drivers are fairly high spec with stout magnets, and while the cabinets are vinyl, that was fairly typical of even upper midrange speakers of the time. Real veneer cabinets were pretty well exclusive to very expensive offerings by the mid 80's.

Right now there is a pair of PM-C100 in Florida at "that auction joint" for a surprisingly reasonable price, but they are pickup only, and much too far for me to drive and get them at $5+ a gallon. That's a pity, but I'm very well set on speakers anyway. In fact, over the July 4 weekend, I will finally be the proud owner of a pair of SP-5000's. Not that I need them, but what the hell, right?

Heh. This has been a back burner deal brewing for almost a year I guess. The present owner graciously offered them to me (I'd previously bought a pair of SP-5500 and SP-300 from him) at a very fair price, and he had these 5000's he decided to replace with some Bozaks, I believe.

He is in eastern TN and I had intended to drive down there and pick them up, but first covid shut downs, then my work schedule, an ongoing issue with leg pain that is brutal on long drives, and now the cost of gas, has been making it tough for me to get there. Lo and behold, he is taking a road trip which brings him through St. Louis on 7/2, so I can meet him locally and get them, which is absolutely outstanding. Just incredible luck on my part.

I actually have had some spare parts (mids and tweeters) set aside for the 5000's for several months (just in case), anticipating this deal finally coming to fruition. I'll be interested to see how they compare and contrast with the 5500's, which I've owned and enjoyed for years. Now I'll be in the "elite club" that owns both, at long last.

I did sell one pair of 5500's to a buddy of mine (after years of prodding from him) which still left me with 3 pair of those. I also sold my SP-1700 and 2500 a while back, and the 3500's are next to go. My cache of Sansui speakers is outrageous, if I'm being totally honest. If I were to collect any more now, it would either be SP-L800'S, PM-C100's or XL-900's. All of those are so rare, and usually so costly, that its unlikely I'll get any of them. But, never say never, I suppose.

Question. I have a pair of pioneer CS-R390-K speakers here in addition to the SP-5000 pair. I'm having trouble tracking down the impedance on the R390s. Anyone happen to know what it is?

I have a pair of SP 5000's and they've always sounded amazing. Well, recently noticed that they just didn't sound as great. After further investigation I realized the 2.5" Horn tweeters (16ohm) stopped working. At 1st I was using my ohm meter and there was continuity. Cleaned the Pots but still nothing. decided to cut the wires and hook up another tweeter and I was able to produce sound. So I bought replacement tweeters that are 8ohm. When I hooked them up there is a very faint sound. Do I need to make adjustments to to the crossover? Or should I seek out original 16 ohm tweeters? Or does anyone know if there is a replacement 16 ohm tweeter out there? Thanks in advance for any and all help.

AU777 coupled to Bozak Urban 300's for FM duty. Sansui 881 is switched between RSL 3300 and DLK 1 1/2. The RSL's need to be pushed to sound good. The DLK's are just a wonderful sound no matter how or what you play. Lastly, the big boy's come out to play - G9700 and DIY Sentinel's (15" horn loaded bangers) when chest slam is in need.

Some info on the drivers I discovered a while ago.

10 inch model

In the PCM line also had the C-200 with a 15 inch woofer.

Make sure one hits the translate to English button.

pmc cone

Some cool speakers on the site most have no Idea of in the US.

Hey Sansuiman, I agree with the "never say never," I just bought a G-33000 (for a very reasonable price) and when I drove up to Indy to pick it up, the owner threw in a pair of SP-L800's. I really wasn't interested because I'm (dare I say this) really not that into Sansui speakers, but he insisted so I took them with me. I figured I could sale them to someone for a couple of hundred dollars or so...After I got them back to Virginia and had a chance to look them over I decided that they are nice looking speaker and do sound really good. but I do need to have the grills re-done. If any one knows of a good shop that will do this please let me know. Other than the dime size hole in the cloth on the grill they appear to be in amazing shape to be as old as they are...Also does anyone know what the original color for the grills are suppose to be? I want to get these things back to original condition so I can give them to my grand daughter...Thanks for any info that anybody can pass along to me.

That was a double nice score, a 33000 and a pair of SP-L8000. Hell,.that's pretty much a dream score for a goodly portion of regular posters in this forum, I'd say. Stock grille cloth would black fabric, I'd say the readily available (from Parts Express or even off ebay) tight weave stretch grill cloth should do quite nicely for replacement. I have no suggestion on who to have do the work, maybe try a local upholstery shop. Not really too tough to replace in most cases.

In any case, you've just entered the upper echelon of Sansuidom with that pairing. Nicely played.

My12 inch woofer of the PMC-100 note the raised spider. The spider is relatively stiff and cone control is excellent with a lot of travel. Woofer and mid are by far the best drivers I have ever listened to. The voice coil must be very long or there is some unseen stuff going on in there, but I have to go with long as it also has a bump out on rear magnet plate.

-I would first like to note that I am new to the whole forum thing so I apologize if this is not where I should have posted this-
Hello people. I was recently gifted a pair of Sansui SP-5000 speakers with their own little story from my friends father. They sound phenomenal which is why I didn't notice that some of the speakers in each enclosure are not working until I removed the lattice grill to clean them. At the moment it seems to be just the 4" high-mids that are dead. So I decided to replace them. I figured it's a simple enough task. Then I thought, well if I'm going to replace some of the speakers I might as well replace them all. My desire is to maintain the quality of sound that the speaker produces more than anything. I'm not looking to make something ridiculously powerful as the factory speakers are capable of producing massive sound without a dramatic amount of power. And I would like to simply replace the speakers and leave the wiring alone as the crossovers and the switches on the back all seem to function properly. That is, unless any of the wiring needs to be replaced when I open it up. I've never taken on a task of this nature before and I am currently looking for any and all suggestions of reasonably priced speakers that will be suitable for these enclosures. According to the specs I found on the internet each enclosure houses 2 - 2.5" horn style tweeters, 2 - 4" high-midrange, 2 - low-midrange, 1 - 15" subwoofer. I would be most grateful for any replacement speaker suggestions. I'm not partial to any particular brand as long as they sound good. Money is the biggest issue. I'm also open to any other suggestions and advice anyone may have that would apply to any part of this undertaking. Thanks a bunch.
Hello Kyuzo2k10 - I imagine you've been through those speakers by now, but my $.02 is a simple search for speaker parts and then get the exact correct ones as specified by the manufacturer, or a recommended suitable replacement. I have bought from speakerworks and a call to them would help greatly. I recently started picking up old stereo gear and have found a sweet spot for Sansui recievers and Klipsch speakers hopefully picking up a set of Sansui SP-something soon (no SP-X anything), just to hear them. Would love to see any photos if you have your project completed and any remarks about the 4- or 5-way crossover that you found inside.
