I've been checking some of the Cantons out for a while now but haven't bought any. I'm holding back because of my speakers addiction problem.

Fred Sanford is a huge fan of Cantons.
No idea how I've missed this thread for so long, I would have also chimed in on the "Canton is a pleasure to work with" and "Hell, yeah, spend the money!"

I've worked at two Canton dealers over the years, and spec'd many of them for clients. Service has always been great- not always free, but always good.

There are over a dozen Cantons here- and they're all good speakers. The Minimus-sized ones mentioned are Plus S, and they're an all-time favorite of mine.

thanks denny.....

cantons speakers are well regarded here in germany....

I have a chance of picking a pair of quinto 510 in excellent condition for 50 euros....they have metal grilles and a beautiful walnut wood...

the reviews here in germany are good....i am not sure if that is a good price for them..

They look like very nice speakers. The build quality seems to be very high. They remind me a lot of the ADS speaker line here in the US. If you don't see any posts from Mr. Sanford, PM him. He's a hell of a nice guy and very helpful.

I have a pair of them I picked up locally. Neither the seller of myself knew much about them. I could not believe how good these small bookshelf speakers sounded. Very full, excellent mid and high range. I was impressed enough to look up what I could find about Canton. Looks like about everything they made was top end. I would definitely say get them!

Bronco,

The owner wants 50 euros....They are the walnut model and have a few minor scraches...

They seem to have been refoamed recently with rubber foam...

Is the cone made out of paper? Is rubber an upgrade from Canton?

Could you be kind enough to post a foto (close up)

I know they were originally 500 dollars

Thanks!

Well, look at that, I'm a hell of a nice guy! Thanks for that...

Sorry, didn't catch your PM & this thread didn't come up in "New Posts" search- yes, there are Quinto 510s here- they, like most of my Cantons, were rescues from folks that were discarding them (REALLY rich folks). Mine are very abused, and have a couple of issues because of that, but if I had a line on some woodgrain cabs in good shape I'd be jumping on them.

I'll try to get some pics of mine so you have a reference for my comments, but picture some nice, white speakers that lived for many years in a hot, humid, chlorine-laced pool house and you'll start to get the idea.

From memory, these are acoustic suspension, ~8" 3-ways with dome mid & tweet. I can take a look at cone material later today. If my surrounds haven't decayed, I'm not sure why ANY would have...that seems strange to me.

I've still got some imbalance issues (haven't used test equipment yet, but it seems one mid is quieter than the other), I'll be checking the x-over some day. ***Keep in mind these drivers are somewhat covered in chlorine scaling, which might explain what I'm hearing.***

I've been listening to these lately as near-field monitors while my JBL L110s have been out for cabinet work, and I have to say they're not my favorite in that application. Mirror imaged, I believe, which is good, but just too heavy on the highs. To me, Cantons are usually a bit bright & shimmery, these are a bit beyond that. In a normal living room, with furniture and drapes and listening from a distance, they'd likely be very good. Currently they're in my under-construction studio control room with hard floors & untreated walls and just over arm's length away from me - too close.

I had picked these up because A] They're Cantons B] They were free, and I'm a hopeless sucker for orphaned speakers, and C] I thought they might make good parts donors for my other Cantons. I've not yet put the time into them to bring them up to performance specs.

Hope that helps...have you seen these pages? Might be some applicable info:

Good luck,

OK, you made me look- and here's an important bulletin. The dome mids on these protrude enough from the baffle board's face that they can make contact with the perforated metal grille! Be careful when transporting these that there's no pressure against the grille itself. When installing the grille, don't press it all the way into the groove (there were felt or rubber friction wraps around the grille's edge originally, mine are deteriorating).

Pics later, have to run for now.

Hi,

Cantons were never too popular here in the USA. Mainly due to cost reasons. Their main competitor was ADS which by then was building them in the USA from imported drivers so they were somewhat less expensive and similar sounding. I like Cantons when paired by suitable sources and electronics. They demand that for good sound.

Canton speakers are well regarded here in Germany....

The ones I have heard sound quite good.......All Cantons that I have seen have a high quality built....

However, I have never heard the Quinto 510 or any other Canton from the Quinto line.....The quinto 510 was build between 1980-84 and the retail value was around 500 dollars...If I am not mistaken..

Nel, can you listen to these at your place? I bet the new Yamaha would sound great with them, I believe these were meant to be on stands with proper room placement to get the killer soundstage. 50 euros is about $120 US, that doesn't seem too far out of line if your like how they sound:thmbsp:

Craig,

unfortunately I can't listen to then at my place....

But if they sound as good as they look............
This particular model has a walnut finish; the finish of these speakers has quality writen all over it...

But my dream speaker is the Infinitesimal as far as small speakers is concerned...

You are right about the combination of Canton and Yamaha....I am quite curious....I need a second pair of speakers to tinkle around, so we will see..

I will meet the guy next Saturday....

My Canton Karat 20s (with a GL300F center) in my Living Room are on a Yamaha RX-V1000, and the Quinto 510s are currently on a Yamaha P2100 power amp off a mixer board. The Karats/GL300F sound great (usually used for movies, but also for surround music), but as I said my Quintos are a bit brittle as nearfields in a hard room. However, with the discovery of the grilles contacting the mids, I'm starting to think that I may have been hearing more of a lack of mids rather than an over-abundance of highs...we'll see. My Yamaha amplifiers have always seemed tight & accurate, which I like in general.

I've also got the JBL L46s from my basement theater out for work, so there's Cantons in that system for now, too- 3 Patio 160s as L/C/R, and a pair of Plus S as rears. Similar issue here- with the room location (shelves near the sheet rock ceiling) and current electronics (Adcom pre, Elan power) they're a bit bright and lacking the visceral slam of the JBLs. Not bad, but may be wanting different locations and components to do their best. I have absolutely loved the Plus S in the past, they're an absolute favorite "solution" speaker.

I guess I'd say that I usually put JBLs where I'm critically listening (ie: I'm in that room in order to hear music) and Cantons where I'm working around decor and still want a beautiful, airy sound around me. Keep in mind that my Cantons are all bookshelf sized, and my JBLs are...um...bigger than any of my books.

From the German links, am I correct that the crossover points of the Quinto 510s are 800 Hz and 5,000 Hz?

Here are a couple photos of my Quinto 510s. Sorry it took so long to get these up. As an earlier poster had stated, this thread did not come up for me on new posts. The woofer cone is paper, the surrounds are foam. These speakers have epecially nice sounding tweeters.

Mr. Sanford! Hopefully after 9 years you are still able to receive replies from this forum.

I was recently given an old set of the Canton 510's and one of the speakers seemed to be missing some of the mid-range. I carefully took off the grill and listen to all three of the speakers individually and the mid-range was missing some what. I couldn't resist touching the Dome on the mid-range and found that the surface of it is very sticky. Even the Tweeter dome was sticky.

I discovered that while touching the side of the mid-range Dome the full sound of that mid-range speaker reappeared. So my thinking is, that this sticky substance (whatever it is) that uniformly covers the Dome of the speaker, is somehow restricting speaker movement. And so, my question to you is, (and hopefully you know what to do), Is this normal? If not, can it be cleaned with some type of approved solvent? Any help from any of the members of this forum on what to do to revive this wonderful pair of speakers would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

Steve.

Steve,
The sticky surface on tweeter and mid is likely normal. I have Canton Karats and ADS with stick done drivers.
