Capacitor(sticker)Shock!

My next thing on the to-do list for my amp is to replace the 10000uf 75v caps, plus a few others.
It has two of those, and the cheapest ones on Mouser is $47.00!
I was not expecting that.
I also was not expecting to see an across the board tolerance rating of -10%, +75%. Is that a thing with big caps?

I've never seen a variance that big short of guessing how many jelly beans were in a jar.

10,000µf@75vdc .. What physical size are the originals? Screw terminals? Solder lug?

You could put higher than 75v caps in there too as long as they’ll fit. 80v or even 100v May be more common and less expensive.

AFAICT, manufacturers don't want to make screw terminal caps anymore, so the prices can be out of sight. I adapt snap terminal caps whenever possible as I think the technology is better (more different applications and life ratings) and the price is much lower.

What do the snap terminal caps look like?

I think it’s more that screw terminal caps do not lend themselves to automated assembly - so the market demand isn’t there.

ConradH means Termination Style "Snap in"

Look like this:

Good luck,

If you want STICKER SHOCK I just got a quote from Audio Research for some 800uf/450VDC capacitors, $200 EACH!!!!!!!!! I need 12 of them. I can get them from Mouser for $55 each.

I used snap in's and solder wire connector ends with eyes on the leads. You can solder your wires to them or use screws through the eyes with nuts to secure them. If the amp has screw tops it worked out well since you don't have to snip the eyes off the wiring.

I forget what the big caps in my Phase Linear cost, but they were not cheap. Special order group buy type of thing to get ones that are a physical drop-in for the originals. I expect stupid pricing on custom run things like that.
