Cartridge rebuild?

I have a Lyra Argo-i that had it's cantilever snapped off after an unfortunate run-in with an intoxicated friend of mine. Is there anything I can do to salvage it, such as a rebuild through Lyra? I absolutely loved the cartridge, but I really can't afford another one right now (this one came as a package deal with my turntable). Any help would be appreciated!

There are other companies that will rebuild your Lyra but I tend to go with the original maker for rebuilds. They tend to run from 40-60% the cost of a new cartridge.

I assume the other companies would charge less? I would like to go through Lyra for piece of mind, but is there any other reason to not go with a different, cheaper company?

you may want to consider SoundSmith. I can't vouch for their rebuilds bu many have been happy w/ their Denon 103R rebuilds.

As far as I know, SoundSmith will not rebuild a cartridge with a missing cantilever? Only whole and worn out cartridges. But, if they will, they have a good reputation.

If it was me, it would be headed back to Lyra for a factory rebuild. That way you know exactly what you are getting :)

They do replacement of cantilever as well as tip so I'd think that they might rebuild cartridges with a missing cantilever. I haven't done that so can't say for sure but a lot of people have been very happy with their cantilever replacement and retipping. I would consider it if money were an issue...although I'd agree with Grumpy that the orig manufacturer is probably best to be sure to get the sound that you liked.

Well, I called a Lyra dealer, and they told me they have an exchange program instead of rebuilding, as rebuilding would cost about the same. If I give them my broken Argo-i they will give me a new one for $1000, whereas a new one would be $1500. I called Soundsmith and they should be calling me back soon. At this point, unless anyone has any suggestions, I will probably be looking for a Dynavector 20x to replace it. Do people buy cartridges with missing cantilevers?

Yes, they do, particularly when there's an exchange program like you just described.

sure they do, fixing broken cantilevers is one of their main businesses. I had my denon 103r upgraded with a ruby cantilever and line contact stylus.

I know that they are really backed-up however. Last I heard is was over 2 months for repairs.

I have had equipment at Soundsmith for repair. I would suggest getting a firm time frame for repair. 6 to 8 months turn around is nothing for them. I personally have had trouble getting them to return communication also.

Good Luck
