Carver receivers are junk. The Magnetic Field Amplifier is a power management scheme that allows for a smallish transformer to be fitted for a 130 wpc amp. Carvers are also known for poor solder joints.

Well that outta make all those AK members that own one of these units feel real good about their purchase, especially if they paid anything near the MSRP of these units when they were new.
I was looking to get this same receiver for my shop but because you say they are "junk" perhaps you can suggest a suitable alternative in the $175.00 price range that would provide the same specs as the MXR-130.

I loved my carver 772. It produced beautiful sound. It is broken in my basement as we speak though. I think its on its way out.

I used to sell Carver gear, including the big receivers. I could not name anything that would give you better specs or features for the money at the time. Better sound and/or build quality? That would have been easy: pretty much anything else in the store.

In the used $175 price range there would be many alternatives such as a big HK receiver. If having the remote control or getting everything in one chassis is not important you can look at a lot of vintage integrated amp/tuner or even seperates combos from the usual suspects HK, Kenwood, Denon, Yamaha, Pioneer, NAD (similar build quality to Carver on some units) and so on.

I had a carver reciever once. It died a smelly smoky death driving a pair of 4ohm boston acoustics speakers. Out of the the dozens of recievers and integrateds that I've driven these speakers with the carver stands out as the only one that couldn't cut the mustard. I like my carver power amps very much but wouldn't give one of their recievers a causal glance.

Before you point too many fingers, I'm not the only one saying this. I've owned the Receiver, HR-772, an HT surround/processor amp, and several CDP's so I can safely speak from experience.

Suggestions. The Kenwood KR-8050 is 125 wpc and sells for well below $175.00. It has a pretty silver face and the watts come from a heavy transformer so they are real.

I purchased an MX 30 brand new. It still runs in my main system however it's been repaired 3 times over the years and is starting to poop out again. When it works it's excellent. I definitely have no confidence in the unit and prefer my much older Kenwood integrated amps even at almost half the power. I truly wish I could like this machine........but I can"t

Stop wasting time looking at mid-fi junk and get yourself a quality amplifier for those speakers. The Odyssey Stratos can be found used for around $600. There are some older Aragon amps that can be had for $400 or so.

You know, my Carver m-400 Magnetic Field Power Amplifier (the cube), has served me faithfully since I got it, and I know that it has never seen repair. I know that it needs to be rebuilt, given it's age, but as far as that goes, it can be said of any amplifier that is nearly 30, they all need that kind of work.

I don't know about the MXR line, but I am personally not a fan of the stuff that was turned out after Bob Carver was no longer a part of the Carver Corp. There are some things that were made while he was there that were a little sub par (the original CD player is a prime example), but by and large, his products have withstood the test of time quite well. I have always been pleased with my C-4000 and M-400 amp/preamp setup since I put it together.
